8208 and sieves...

generaly speaking during normal handeling, shipping etc. wouldn't there be SOME natural settling/sifting occuring?. You know smaller grains to the bottom that sort of thing. Or if a powder container was vibrated wouldn't the smaller grains also sink in the container. And wouldn't those tendencies make the first few load batches from a container be predominantly the larger grains in that container? therby reduceing load densities initially.

so then if you don't sieve your powder would you be better off shaking your powder up like spray paint can to mix it up ?

WOW I hate to say this but I've been loading for 40+ yrs and until just now it NEVER occured to me to do the shakeup of a powder container :eek::eek: Put me in the corner with a pointy hat on.

In all honesty Roger, I just did it to do it, I really never thought why. I was always just used to shaking things before pouring out of a jug. Kinda like a kid in a gravel driveway....he's gonna throw rocks.

I too sift 8208 through #30 and #20 seives. The 8208 falls through the #30 but the large chunks of debris do not. The small ball powder that is in the lot of 8208 that I have falls through the #20 but the 8208 will not. I do not sort the various sized grains of 8208. I have had pretty good results with this method.

VV133 isn't perfectly clean. I found this stuck in my powder measure a couple years ago. The measure started to act very erratic, so I tore it apart and this was stuck just above the drop tube. Looks like a piece of extruded powder that didn't get cut into pieces.

Hell of a place to put your change, I hope this wasn't a 97 lot

I don't remember any details either but my overall recollection is that sifting powder (and mixing powder) comes and goes. It would seem that sifted 8208 would no longer be 8208 and unique unto itself/strainers used. Once tuned I suppose it would be "better" than the unsifted variety.

Don't have any basis for this comment but "mathematically", the number of pieces, the number of consistent pieces, and the number of odd pieces could possibly work out to a no never minder in the long run. There's a lot of pieces in an eight pound jug.

Grain size surely affects burn rate and it follows that consistent size would give a consistent rate. Makes sense to sift.

Sifting

I was curious as to powder I have and went to check some 8208 I have of which I have and found a very small piece of paper. The VV 133 I checked, 01 vintage, found some strings like liljoe found. I had only 2 pounds of 8208 to check, and 2 pounds of VV 133.

Just out of curosity I took a look at H322, Benchmark and N133 under a 20x loupe. H322 and Benchmark appear to be the same powder as Hovis said. Near as I could measure the grains are about .028-.032 in diameter and about .032 long. Very uniform looking. Really can't tell one from the other. N133 on the other hand looked like something swept up from the loading floor. Grains seem to average about .035 or so in diamerter but length varies from .028 up to .080+. Some with rather tapered or diagonal cut ends. N133 very well could be a mix of more than one of Vhit's powders. Only looked at these three but was totally surprised at the way the '07 N133 looked.............Donald

Richard "Dick" McQuisten was the culprit . . .

If I remember, about 10 years ago, there was a article in the now defunct Shooters News, about sifting powder. The Author was pretty exstensive, but I can't remember what the general consensus was concerning the results.......jackie

I believe Jackie is referring to an article (maybe a serries) by Richard McQuisten, of Medicine Bow, WY. He had access to the labs at the Universtiy of WY - I believe his alma mater - where his detailed efforts were conducted in a temperature/humidity controled environment, and well documented. As I recall, he "sorted" either N-133 or N-135. RG

What to do then

with the different sieves of powder.Do you work up loads specific to each ? possibly 3-4 batches in a container. Or load to weight as normal with each sieve?

Sift'n

It's not just the '07, as far back as I can remember 133 has looked like this.......jackie

Yep, Quite irregular in length and "cut"..............

Ready to have a good look at Lou's powders...!

I sifted my Lot 16167 from Bartlet, very consistent with a tiny amount of spherical powder and black "dust" in the end... 32lbs and no "trash"... Guess I'm lucky.?

Donald, He has a lot of 8208.

The wind is blowing so hard down here in Duncan I can't get to the range. Blows my car off the road. Went out Tuesday, got all set up....flags, etc out to 200, then got the rifle out and......damn, forgot the bolt. Back at the shop. Just wanted to confirm some loads. Should have gone back out Tue after lunch but had promised wifie to take her to Lawton shopping,...ugh! Looks like Friday should be good here....will go no matter what. Yes I will be at Luther Sat. God willing and the creeks don't rise or we get another snow storm. Worked on my oil derricks...I mean flag stands last night. So far the new Shilen looks decent,...not great, but decent. When you get right down to it, I probably can't shoot good enough to tell a hummer from a bummer. BY THE WAY.....WHEN DID YOU GET SOME 8208!!! YOU BEEN HOLDIN OUT ON ME. See you Sat............Donald
