22-250?

Redrock

Steve Grosvenor
Its been around for a long time, just wondering if there is a "Standard" 52-53gr powder primer combo, or better yet after all these years what has been YOUR favorite 22-250 Combination?

Many will work

I remember an article in Shooting Times a couple of years back were the author got our about 15 different powders for his 22-250 and then teamed them up randomly with different bullets. End result was he made +80% shoot well. Personal I am a H380/Fed210M kind of a guy with 45-55 gr bullets. I has worked a long time and I haven't found the need to chase down anything else. Luck, tiny

700VSSF in 22-250, 36.0-38.0grs of H380,50-55gr anything, fed #210, any brass that's preped

I've shot thousands of rounds through 22-250's. I've used many different powders and like posted earlier, made about all of them shoot well under moa. I have two 22-250's and I can say the biggest improvement in them came when I started using 52gr. Berger FB's. Then I loaded up some with N135 and things really got tight. I'm not breaking speed records with the N135 but it sure shoots little bitty holes in paper.

my 22-250

also likes H380 with 55gr bullets. however it really leaves the carbon coal in the barrel. of lately i use varget with the same bullet and it cleans up easier. ( that is personal opinion ) oh yes i use CCI primers to light both loads. Fred

When I had .22-250's I liked RL-15 in them. Lots of velocity, good accuracy, but throat life wasn't too great. I'm one of the minority I guess who never had much luck with H380.

Redrock: I am currently reloading for 6 Varmint Rifles in caliber 22-250 Remington - NONE of them shoot 52 or 53 grain bullets on an on going basis.
Mainly because my favorite manufacturer of Varminting bullets (Sierra) makes 52 and 53 grian bullets that ARE exceptionally accurate BUT they are also exceptionally HARD.
In other words these Sierra "52 and 53 grain weight bullets" like you might be referring to are the most prone to ricochet bullets (non-FMJ) that I have ever seen!
Dangerous, in other words - so I don't use them at all and I don't Hunt with anyone that does use them!
I think the Sierra folks are the only ones to produce 22 caliber bullets in 52 and 53 grain weights?
Safety and liability issues are just to great.
And there are way to many frangible and safer bullets to use out there nowadays.
I do use the great little 52 grain Speer hollowpoint flat base bullets in several of my 220 Swifts and on occassion in one 22-250's, as this is a VERY frangible and fur friendly bullet.
Varget, IMR 3031 and IMR 4064 are my go to powders for the 22-250 - best of luck with your 22-250 but stay away from the Sierra 52's and 53's for your Varminting needs.

Steve,

I have narrowed my choices down to 3 powders (H380 - Varget - R15) H380 measures very easy due to its spherical shape, but it is not an "extreme" powder - so I don't use that anymore. If I loaded up 3 rounds of each Varget and R15 and shot the groups - I probably couldn't tell which was which. That is the nice thing about the 22-250 - it digests just about everything. Isn't the 22-250 based off of the 30-06 case?

I have shot a pair of 22-250s and have had excellent accuracy from 50 gr Vmax bullets and h4895 in both rifles. Same bullet and Varget was really close to being just as good. My 700 was very consistant with almost anything you fed it but my Abolt was more fussy(still is really) and hated all 55 gr bullets.

In the 700 Sendero, I have also had excellent luck with H414 and 55gr Nosler BTs and shot a 52gr Hornady Amax as well. It also shot 37.4grains of Varget and a 40 gr Vmax extremely well(by my standards)

I have a new Savage 22-250 (with the accu-stock)on the way so I am watching this thread for ideas on that one also.

Thanks and good luck,

Jamie

The .22-250 is based on the .250-3000 Savage case (thus .22-250), and they're both based on a shortened .30-'06 case, which is based on the 8x57 Mauser case, just like a lot of other modern rimless rounds.

I have never had a .22-250 have good barrel life. All of them went fast. But when you hit the kind of velocities as the .22-250 none of the chambering last long for barrel life.

It is the price we pay for the fun of shooting these fun little bullets.:)

Mr. Elliott,

Thanks for the information. Actually, I've never heard of the 250-3000 Savage. Does that mean the 30-06 would be the grandparent of the 22-250?:D Didn't mean to hijack your thread Steve.

The 8x57 Mauser is the great grand daddy of most all rimless cartridges except for the old Remington rimless cases (.25, .30, .32, and .35 which is different than the smaller three), the .222 Rem series, and the new short magnum and ultra magnum cases. Charles Newton designed the .250-3000 for Savage back in the 1920's, and shortly afterwards someone necked it down to .224 as a wildcat. Cartridges of the World is an invaluable resource to get an idea of what's related to what and how.

IMR 4064 and sierra 53 matchkings are very accurate together. I shoot in a 40x and savage vlp, both shoot well with this combo.

These are .012" off the rifling and 3580 FPS, not speed demons but make a nice .3" ragged hole @ 100 yards. I use them for our monthly 600 yard varmint Silhouette match. I was using Federal 210M's when they were available but have switched to CCI's due to availability. For coyotes, I am by law, forced to use led free, so its the 36 grain Barnes VG. YMMV
