Freezing temps and primers & powder

OK, thx...pretty much what I thought. Some other friends suggested moisture and high heat are problems, but cold not so much.

Freezing temps and primers & powder

I should add... ...this is a temporary plan for this winter only. He had damage to his house and has to move them somewhere. Does that make a difference?

Freezing temps and primers & powder

A family member lives in Eastern PA and has to temporarily move his primers and powder out of the house. He's thinking of a storage unit that is sheltered, but unheated. He asked me if they would be OK, but I don't know for sure. No freezing temps where I live and heat is more of a problem for...

    Another has left the range

Henry will be missed! He was always ready to talk and joke. You better remember what you said last time, because Henry would! Last year I was sighting in a new air rifle in my backyard. Didn't realize the power was quite as great as it was; the pellets went right through the side fence and hit...

New to Benchrest and have a couple questions

+1 on this. The cast iron Bald Eagle is perfectly adequate to start. Be sure to get some wind flags. Bench rest shooters are quite willing to share with others, especially new shooters. However, there are a LOT of varying opinions...it can be confusing. Try to shoot in matches and find a few...

    Disassembling a Hall bolt completely

Seems Allan used both methods to join the firing pin shaft and cocking piece. On my Hall-S, there are two 1/16th" hex heads, one to secure the firing pin and the other on top of it to lock the first. My Hall-M has a roll pin. This fooled me for a while. It is set pretty deep and there was some...

    Disassembling a Hall bolt completely

Thx Dusty. OK, I see a hole on the cocking piece. The pin isn't visible, but I guess it must be recessed a bit in the hole, so I can use my driver to knock it out. Does the spring need to be restrained or something? Do I keep the "bolt removal tool" locked on during the process, or take that...

    Disassembling a Hall bolt completely

Not just removing the firing pin assbly; I have the tool for that. Rather taking the shroud, firing pin, spring etc apart. I have a Hall M which has been used very little. It seems to shoot inconsistently with a couple of barrels. There are some wear marks on the thicker section of the firing...

    Bending a stock?

Initially, I thought that the imperfection was trivial, but 3 successive barrels showed the tendency to produce slotted groups along the path of movement. I realize this could be an ignition problem, or bag-drag or even technique; but it does seem to be real. I've tried variations of technique...

    Bending a stock?

I tested this a long time ago by using layers of tape, and it did improve the situation. The x-hair movement was much less. The gun is right at 10.5 lbs though (very slightly under), so I can't add significant weight. Bending would be much more ideal, but from what I'm reading won't work.

    Bending a stock?

I have an old Lee Six stock which has a slight bend on the butt...something like "cast-off" on a shotgun stock. It does not ride the bags quite right having a right to left movement as the gun is slides back on the bags. Through the scope it looks like the cross hairs move to the right about 2"...

    Defective chamber...

Matter Resolved Well after some time, Savage did the right thing. Rather than replace the barrel, they just replaced the entire rifle. It was disconcerting that it took so long and required several calls and emails, but in the end, they made things right as we always assumed they would. My...

    Defective chamber...

Thx, Wilbur, I appreciate that. My intention was never to bad mouth a manufacturer. A little time is needed to reach a responsible person over there. I'm sure they'll do the right thing once they understand the problem. I hope that will be soon and I can report they did the right thing...

    Defective chamber...

That sounds about right. I edited the first post to show the case shoulders better. I'm hoping to get a few more replies along the lines of what would be required to fix this. I want to have a specific repair in mind when we talk to Savage.

    Defective chamber...

RESOLVED: Defective chamber... RESOLVED: this issue has been resolved, please see the end of the post for the story. My brother recently bought a new Savage model 12 in 300 WSM. When we fired it, the cases showed a serious chamber flaw on the shoulder. "][/URL] The case on the right is new...

    Click value in grains

As others have said, the click numbers are relative. I have a Jones measure and plotted several powders on graph paper; clicks on the vertical and grains on the horizontal starting lower than case capacity and going way over. It comes out pretty much a straight line. You can also get a ratio...

    More on the "click"

Wilbur, I know just enough to get myself in trouble.

    More on the "click"

The brass is really unusual! The story I heard was that someone, maybe Seeley Masker, wanted to see if there was an "American" answer to the then new .220 Russian cases. Someone prevailed on Federal and they made a short run of 30-30 cases with small primer pockets and flash holes. The rims were...

    More on the "click"

Hmmm, called Widden. They said if the base has expanded to the point where it's extracting hard, clicking etc, then the brass is probably not going to be restored no matter how much the base is resized because the brass "wants" to return to the previous size. So I guess even if it then chambers...

    Stock painting...

You do nice work, Lee. I have to practice everything at least 3x before I'm satisfied. Pillar bedded at least 10, but just now getting the kinks worked out. I talked to TM today. He isn't cheap, but I know it will be top notch and I would probably spend more myself just learning. btw you are...
