    Has anyone seen this?

I chambered a 7mmRM by cutting off the tennon a Rem700 take off barrel. I should have faced off the burr, because the reamer wobbled 0.0050" all the way to headspace. To my suprise the rifle shoots sub moa. I realized I had confused the mathematically predictable and verifiable effects of...

    Has anyone seen this?

No gunsmiths like to hear this, but the mathematical relationship between eccentricity and group size is for bent cartridge necks randomly oriented into the chamber. The math does not work for bent chambers. They might throw all the bullets into the same off center point in the target. From...

My new lathe - Precision Matthews PM1340

In my 11 years of owning my PM1236, I have barrelled a few dozen actions, but that is tiny fraction of my using it every day. Lots to say good about it, but here are some complaints: 1) The 5 Volt power supply in the DRO died. 2) A gear came loose in the lower gear box. 3) I broke the...

    Savage 99 loose threads

I got a 1917 take down 250 Sav in 2004 that someone made a brass shim to try to tighten it up. This year I turned down a Bartlein barrel, chambered in 250 Sav and made a dovetail nut to hang the post war forend that would take a bipod.

    My new Hobby Mill:

I took shop class in 8th and 9th grade in 1965. I loaned money to my brother to set up a gunsmithing shop with lathe, mill, TIG welding, and tooling in 2000. Having an inventory of that metal shop allowed me to set up my own. In the last 18 years I have rebarreled ~ 3 dozen rifles. I am on my...

General Impressions of Grizzly G4003G Lathe

It is 9 years later with the PM1236 from China. Every day I am grateful I no longer own a Clausing 5913. Over the last 9 years I have only built a few dozen rifles. I had to fix the change gear box when key came loose. I drilled and tapped to re attach it. I had to buy a new cross feed DRO...

    Type 99 action strength

I bought a 1917 Sav 99 250-3000 made in 1917 at a gunshow for $175 in 2004. The barrel is shot out. I re threaded a 6mmPPC benchrest take off barrel and chambered for 6mmBR. I worked up until CCI 450 small rifle magnum primers would pierce. I drilled and tapped for a scope. I took it to the...

Tips on loading the .257 Roberts?

I have shot deer with the Roberts 115 gr Nos Bal Tip. I have shot deer with the 270 130 gr Nos Bal Tip. At 40 yard and at 400 yards. I can't tell the difference.

    Cz 527 varmint

The chamber may have been over chamfered causing unsupported case wall causing case failure. The bolt failures were secondary caused by gas. In a 98 Mauser, from the times I have seen it, the extractor fails, but the bolt head does not break into pieces.

    Cz 527 varmint

My problem is the two bolt faces that have failed. That has never happened to me in 51 years with 100 real Mausers.

    1885 Uberti Hi-Wall Experiences Anyone?

I have the Antique Winchester 1885, the Browning M78, the Browning 1885, and the Uberti 1885. They are all very good. I bought the Uberti 30-30 heavy barrel new on line for $525 + $36 shipping and FFL in 2005. I never fired it, but in 2012 I pulled the barrel and made a sketch of the breech...

Drop a go gauge into a cartridge gauge, this is not what I expected

The 223 case SAAMI drawing is 1.4666 -.0070 The chamber is 1.4636 + 0.0100 0.0030 overlap in a range of 0.0140" Watching this video by Wilson, they say the 223 case gauge measures the SAAMI min and max for a cartridge with 0.005" groove. This does not make sense. That would require a 0.0070"...

Drop a go gauge into a cartridge gauge, this is not what I expected

I thought the go gauge would come up level with the top of the case gauge. I was wrong. I looked into it further. I thought that in SAAMI drawings tolerance there would be a range for cartridges and a range for chambers with no overlap, so there was guaranteed clearance. I was wrong. It is up...

    What's your Favorite Bedding Epoxy??

I use devcon steel putty. I get it from Brownells or Amazon. I like it because I do not have to fight time or gravity. I have bedded 10 Mausers this month and working on #11 tonight.

    Eric Johnson and G.Titherington rifles

I bought a Win 52 last night. Glad I found this thread about Titherington, because that's what it says on the barrel.
