You AR15 accuracy nuts.........I need your input about WOA barrels !!!!

vaniB - I've been shooting barrels from WOA in NRA HP competition since the late '90s, and can attest to the quality products that John's shop produces. One of his service rifle uppers with a PacNor 1:6.5 twist, 3-groove bbl. shot really great with JLK 90VLDs. I used it to shoot a 199-14x in a...

    6mm dasher fireform cases

Gary, a couple of the replies touch on what I was talking about - you can't generate enough pressure with 4831 - even with heavier bullets - to do a good job fireforming. I understand wanting to use 4831SC if you don't currently have a better use for it. But when you consider how well most...

    6mm dasher fireform cases

To my way of thinking, there's really only one viable reason to go with a Dasher over a std. BR, and that's to get higher velocities out of the heavier (105-115gr) bullets used in mid- & long-range shooting. To that end, I've always fireformed with 105-107gr. bullets, using Varget, N150, or...

    Imr 8208

Lee - The oldest lot# I've got is 4798, but I really haven't taken time to work with it in anything. Just received a couple of 8lb. jugs from PV that are both lot #4855 - I'm somewhat more than slightly disappointed to hear more negative comments on this stuff than positive. Will probably have...

    284 shooters

That data is using the old max. COAL for the 284. The 284 was originally designed to be used in Win. M88 & M100 rifles, with short magazines, which required bullets to be seated deeply into the case. My barrels are throated to allow 180VLDs to be seated out to the point where the bullet's...

    284 shooters

Butch, I've got three 284 bbls., and have shot RL17 in all three with both Berger & JLK 180s, as well as S175MKs. I can get 2900fps out of both of the 30" bbls. with RL17, with accuracy good enough for LR prone HP matches. However, H4831 (not the SC version) produces 2800+fps, with slightly...

    6.5x47 Lapua question

I've been very impressed with Berger 130VLDs & 140LRBTs with CCI 450s & RL17. Barrels are 1:8 Bartlein & Kriegers. Velocities with the 130s are 2900+; 140s are run at 2800+fps. I've seen higher velocities mentioned, but have gotten best accuracy at lower numbers.

    Vais Brake?

The rifles I've installed Vais brakes on have shot just as well after the installation as they did before, and I've not noticed any major shift in zero, nor in preferred loads. That's not a large sample - only three or four of my own rifles, but that's what I've seen.

    6.5x47 Lapua question

I use RL17 and my reamer has .123" FB. I've had good results with both Berger 130VLDs & 140 LRBTs out of Krieger & Bartlein 1:8tw. bbls., running the 130s 2930fps, and 140s 2840. I know others have posted considerably higher velocities, but these are the limits in my bbls. - a 30" Bartlein on a...

    Re-chamber Ar-15 barrel?

Nat, this isn't pertinent to the original poster's question(s), but the NRA has changed their Palma rules to allow bolt-action 223 rifles to qualify as a Palma rifle; before, only service rifle configured AR15s chambered for unmodified 223 qualified as a 'Palma rifle'. A 223 bolt rifle with a...

    Wolf small magnum primers

I use a RCBS Ram-prime unit in a dedicated Partner press when seating Wolf primers - either small or large - instead of a hand-priming tool. Don't believe I've experienced a FTF with the SRMs, but have had several with the large ones. I found that my Nesika K won't set the LRMs off more than...

    Your choice of powder scale?

I started out with old (1950s vintage) Redding #3 measure and scale; didn't worry much about weighing individual charges at the time, as I was using WWII surplus H4831 in a 243 with 80gr. bullets. Over the past 15yrs or so of XC & LR HP, the need for more precision became obvious, so I added a...

    FEDEX scam

Our UPS driver has been working this route for over 20yrs., and is getting ready to retire in another month or so. He's a hunter/shooter, and belongs to our local gun club. He knows where my folks & sisters live & work, so if I give him advance notice when I'm going to be out of town for a few...

    Chronograph question

I've had an Oehler M33 since the mid-'80s which works OK most of the time, although - even with the latest factory upgraded diffusers - it still misses shots with annoying regularity. Sometimes this can be traced to one of the six D-cells being slightly low on voltage. That's the main pain with...

Latest report about my AR10 18.5" Fulton ".308 Tomato Stake Barrel"

Well, you've obviously invested in quality parts & components for your AR10 build. I've got three built on DPMS receivers with the DD Lite 12 rails & LMT Sopmod buttstocks - a 6XC, 6.5x47L, and 308 - and have been very pleased with accuracy & reliability. Have fun with yours, but understand...

Barrel thread for a Sako L461 action

Does anyone know of an external action wrench to fit a Sako L461? If not, the only option I see - in order to avoid distorting the integral dovetail scope bases - would be to buy a blank block from Brownells (or just get a chunk of square stock of the correct size) and machine my own.

    Powders for 6mm Dasher

Tom, Charge weights with N150 were about one grain or less heavier than what I loaded with Varget, so load density was fine. A couple of friends have been using nothing but N550 with DTAC 115s in their Dashers for LR prone HP loads. They're loading for a little over 2900fps out of 28" bbls.

    Powders for 6mm Dasher

I've always gotten good results with N150 in my Dashers with 105-107gr. bullets. It gives a little more velocity than Varget on average.

Now that was a halftime show!

I actually missed the game - had shot the final day of the SW LR Nationals down in Phoenix, and was tired enough to take a little snooze before showering when I got back to the motel. Guess it was later than I realized before I headed out for some Mexican chow, because when I got back and...

    Sightron

I have five Sightron SIIIs - one 8-32x56 & four 6-24x50s. Having compared the 8-32 directly against a NF BR of comparable size, there's no doubt in my mind that Sightron's optical quality is at least the equal of the NF. As far as the accuracy & repeatability of their adjustments, they're as...
