284 shooters

.284

Butch:

There is some great information on the .284 onthe 6mmBR website.

I beleive you will find a consensus that H8831SC is the best over all powder for the 180 Berger bullets.

Most if no all got some extra velocity from the Re-17 but their accuracy left them.

Butch,
I've got three 284 bbls., and have shot RL17 in all three with both Berger & JLK 180s, as well as S175MKs. I can get 2900fps out of both of the 30" bbls. with RL17, with accuracy good enough for LR prone HP matches. However, H4831 (not the SC version) produces 2800+fps, with slightly better accuracy. I tried 4831SC, but accuracy & velocity were both better with plain 'ol 4831.

Does this help?

If that is true a lot of guys are shooting very hot loads. I wonder what the pressure is in a 29-30" barrel at 2950fps.
Butch

What is the source of this data? Every .284 shooter that I know shoots waaaaaaaaaay more powder than the max load shown.

he is also showing a 24 vs a 30 in bbl and using 2.8 for coal......

That data is using the old max. COAL for the 284. The 284 was originally designed to be used in Win. M88 & M100 rifles, with short magazines, which required bullets to be seated deeply into the case. My barrels are throated to allow 180VLDs to be seated out to the point where the bullet's bearing surface/boattail junction is above the case's neck/shoulder junction. That's gonna make a whole lot of difference in max. load. I'm running over 54grs. of H4831, and 53grs. of RL17 with 180s.

Butch,

According to Quickloads, running 55.4grs of 4831sc under a 180VLD seated for an OAL of 3.200, the pressure is 61,451psi, and velocity is 2854fps...This is what alot of guys running the straight 284 are doing. I'm running my 284 with 54.8 grs, velocity of 2820fps over the crony...I've heard alot of guys talking about running as much as 56grs in a straight 284...oh....pressure would be in the 68,000psi range....

RL17 data on quickloads...bear in mind this is using 70F as the temp....52.5 grs, 180vld seat to an OAL of 3.20, velocity of 2951fps, pressure of 71,492psi...

Figures are for a 30" barrel...

Hope all is well...

Jim
