    Action Build Log.

Thanks. Thanks fellas for the complements. It's nice to have one's work scrutenised buy the people in the know and have it given the thumbs up.. :D Roo, at this point it's not looking like i'll build any more. My employer has very generously allowed me to use the CNC machinery at work free of...

    Action Build Log.

Update! G'day gentlemen.. Well over the last few evenings i've managed to get the bolts started. The turning operations were completed in my lathe at home and at a much more leisurely pace than i would be at work. I've been going over the drawings this week in preperation for the machining...

    Action Build Log.

Update! G'day Fellas.. Well its been a few weeks since i had some time on the machine, but i took my RDO today and managed to get the CNC part of receiver machining finished. The pic shows the general setup for maching the receiver ring and lug rebates. The same precision bar and bushes...

    How come this won't work?

I would have to agree with Jackie here. Yes you can use the spider chuck to set the stock to run true but unless the bearing is exactly inline with the headstock bearing and then the both of them are inline with the bedways it's not running axialy true. This is a common misconception/problem...

    Action Build Log.

On my initial designs i had Piccatini rail milled into the top of the receiver for scope mounts just as you say, square and in perfect alignment with the action. However when i looked at what the two rifles were going to be used for, one for 500-1000 yard target and the other for 100-200...

    Action Build Log.

More Progress. The receiver blanks were placed in the rotary axis of the CNC mill. This means that it can be rotated very precisly to any angle desired accurate to 1000th of a degree. It was then roughed down to 0.1mm (4 thow) oversize on all 6 sides with a 40 dia insert cutter and then...

    Action Build Log.

G'day guys.. Sorry about that.. I didn't realise that you needed to sign on to AHN to ready my Build log thread. Unfortunatly thats the rules of that forum, one must have an ISP e-mail account which helps to weed out people like the Clown above.. At any rate in the interests of national...

    Action Build Log.

Action Build Log Updated. (Large pic content) G'day Fellas. Some you you will remember mid last year i was asking questions about building my own action from scratch. Well after 6 odd months of research, drawing, several false starts and a severe shortage of "Spare Time" work has finialy...

    Action raceway cutting again........

Wire EDM G'day All Without a doubt wire EDM is the most accurate and arguably the best way to cut raceways. Especialy if they are to be cut after heat treatment. Trouble is like Tony says that it's DAMM EXPENCIVE. At least here in Australia it is.. The cheepest quote i could get to cut...

    fluting a blank?????????

Barel Blanks G'day Ron As far as i know MADDCO Barrels here in Australia flute the barrell after it has been drilled, reamed, rifled and stress relieved, but before the final lapping. Cutting the flutes can cause the bore dia to grow slightly, and can also cause the barrel to warp slightly...

    CZ 452 thread pitch

CZ Pitch G'day Dwight The pitch on my CZ 452 (BRNO Model 2) is 1.25mm. This equates to 20.32 TPI. You could re-chase it to 20.5 TPI but you would have to open out the Dia quite a bit. The pitch error is arround .0004 per pitch so for 20 pitches would be 8 thow. Just out of interest why...

    Building an Action

Design.. Ok Gentlemen after much reading/studying pictures over at Homegunsmith.com and having a "Play" with a few rifles at the LGS, i have decided on a basic design. The action will be a 3 lug "Fat Bolt" design. Receiver will be a flat bottom rectangular shape with built in scope rails...

    Building an Action

Still deciding.. G'day Peter At this stage i plan to braze or silver solder the bolt hande on ALA remington style. As stated by jackie it could just as easily be tig welded on. I am very capable at both processes so the design of the bolt will infleuence my decision. Tig welding if done...

    Building an Action

Hardness Peter, if you think i should keep to less than 42 HRC then thats what i'll do. I would like to get at least 3-4 points difference in Hardness between bolt and receiver so will probably go for 39 HRC for the receiver and 43 HRC for the bolt. Or should i go the other way arround and...
