    Fixing chamber runout

If we start with the assumption that no barrel is perfectly straight, and we are cutting the chamber so that the bullet enters parallel to the bore at the start, then the muzzle should be running out when setup in the lathe, right? When I'm on a trip and I drive into a curved tunnel in the...

Why No 25 Caliber Bench Rest Cartridges?

I hope he stops by and chimes in. 25 caliber benchrest cartidges have won at national level competition, thanks to Randy. Someone must have told him it couldn't be done.

Least expensive spotting scope that could see a 22 caliber hole at 200 yards?

Take a look at the Celestron Ultima series. Under $175 for a 20-60 x 80. They are good for what they cost.

When does the case neck expand?

This makes sense to me. In high speed photography of muzzle blasts and bullet exits we see gases escape in front of the bullet. My guess is these are gases that escape between the bullet and the neck before the bullet is fully engaged in the rifling and is still in the throat area which is...

Do we clean our Rifles too much?

I will give that an adamant yes. At least as it pertains to 30 calibers. As an experiment, I didn't clean the barrel on my HBR rifle for two whole years and it still shot well enough to win a yardage at 2012 nationals. I couldn't see any difference. I was shooting N135 in a 30X47. I'm no...

When does the case neck expand?

Another possibility is when the primer ignites. What happens if you fire a round with a live primer, but the case is filled with an inert substance like cream of wheat?

    need advice about used lathe

A heavy 10 is not a bad choice. Usually you can find one for about $1000, usually with some tooling. Craigslist is a good resource for this. You'll want to make sure it comes with a 3 jaw, and a 4 jaw chuck in good condition. Check the ways to make sure they aren't too worn in front of the...

    .500 drill rod

Thomson linear bearing rod is straight to .001" per foot. It's case hardened so you can still tap the ends, or cut through the case with carbide tooling and then tap the core if need be. And diameters are tightly controlled. It's fairly inexpensive as well for small pieces...

    rem varmint contour barrel

Very true Randy. I just did a quick drawing and it looks like the sweet spot where a Remington Varmint and a HBR contour intersect is at 21.107". Of course there is a little variation from barrel maker to barrel maker. But one would probably be safe in the 21" to 22" range.

    rem varmint contour barrel

A Remington Varmint barrel that is .835" at 26" from the breech is not a legal HBR contour under NBRSA and IBS rules. .750" at 26" is the maximum allowed. I'm not sure if you're building to rules of a particular organization, but it will be capable of shooting just fine. It's fine for VFS.

Wade, Right you are. I believe the 100-200 HBR agg went to Tim Naugle, who did some fine shooting over the course fo the week.

Next-- wind/bullet movement question, where does the wind effect the bullet the most?

I don't understand this. I hear this often, and people seem to be able to glean useful information from reading the holes in the paper. But how many revolutions does the bullet make as it passes through the paper? What actually influences the size of the hole in the paper?
