    Repairing front sight screw holes.

Cut the barrel behind the holes, thread the barrel and install a muzzle brake. He may actually gain an inch of barrel length when the brake is added.

    After Chambering

Chamfer the chamber edge. I use a deburring tool most of the time.

    Barrel spinner/ polishing aid

The bearings in my spinner are 7/8" O.D. and 3/8" I.D. by 11/32 thick. The local "Bearing Distributors" in my town sold them to me. I think they are Japanese. You need to have high speed bearings, obviously. Someone else mentioned using 12L14 for centers. I would advise against steel...

    A couple of questions

Not sure how you reach that conclusion. That's how Harry Pope and P. O. Ackley did it. :) Clemson

    A couple of questions

First turn the chamber end down concentric with the bore by turning between centers. Run the steady on the turned surface. Feed the reamer using a floating reamer holder. The reamer will follow the hole. Clemson

    Barrel spinner/ polishing aid

I made one several years ago that I am still using in my shop. I have never had a barrel "jump out" or otherwise give me any excitement. It works just as well as the Clymer fixture that we have at school. Main tube is 1" steel tubing. Bearings came from Dixie Bearing (Bearing Distributors...

aluminum or steel bushings for Brownell's barrel vise

If you are gonna line the blocks anyhow, it really doesn't matter whether they are steel or aluminum. I have some of each, but all the blocks that I make myself I have made from aluminum. I happen to have a 1 3/4" stick of aluminum to carve them out of. Clemson

    recommended machinist book or handbook

The Gunsmith Machinist by Steve Acker, Book 1 and Book 2. These are by no means comprehensive texts on machine operation, but they are quite useful for information on specific setups that have applicability to Gunsmithing. Both books are available from Brownells. Bill Jacobs

    Lathe question

We took it apart and pulled out the pin, and it is indeed in pieces. We will manufacture another. The pin itself is really dinky -- about 1/16" in diameter. Seems like a very small pin for such a large leadscrew. Meanwhile I aligned the tailstock on lathe #2. Got it dialed in pretty good...

    Lathe question

Problem..... First problem: Lead screw stopped turning on one lathe. Apparently a tiny shear pin runs the lead screw. Have to remove the lead screw to replace the shear pin. Clemson (Clemson 49 -- Syracuse 14)

    Lathe question

Working with two G0509 Lathes The gunsmithing school where I teach has bought two of the Grizzly G0509G lathes. I have been setting them up and running them in. At first, changing speeds and feeds was a chore, but with the run-in recommended by Grizzly (basically 10-20 minutes in each speed)...

    South Bend Heavy 10 question.

Easily worth $1500 and a much better lathe than any of the Chinese units. The bed length is short for chambering barrels, but for learning how to cut threads and make small parts, that lathe is a great one. Collet chuck is a huge plus. Bill Jacobs

    Parts washer solvent??

I have a table-top unit that I use Dawn dish detergent in. Works fine for degreasing actions, etc. I usually dump it and run fresh, hot water into it, then I add a tablespoon or two of Dawn. Bill Jacobs

    factory barrel contouring

I'm certainly not complaining about the duplication service. As I stated, I USE IT. I just don't want folks to think that the barreled action will drop right back into the original stock. Not going to happen. It takes some time to get it back into that nice hunting stock where Great Uncle...

    factory barrel contouring

And another thing......... I like and use Douglas barrels on many of the projects my customers send me. I should note that the contour duplication service that Douglas offers ($50) is great to have, but.... The barrel that I get back is about 0.010 larger in diameter at every point than the...

    Accurate 25 06?

25-06 is probably the most popular caliber that I barrel for. It is very popular here in South Carolina for deer (and will turn a coyote inside out!). I never had an accuracy problem with the cartridge. Bill Jacobs

Threading a barrel for a brake

I'm not sure why you would not want to do brake work between centers. I swing the barrel between centers, cut the threads, install a steady and run it (on the threads if necessary) while I clean up the crown. I taper the end of the brake to match the barrel diameter, usually using the max...
