XP-100 Stock/Stock Painter Question

Gents,

I will be converting an XP-100 into a rifle in the near future. What action inletting should I specify to the stock manufacturer? I wanna say Remington 600, but I'm not for sure.

And I plan on having this stock painted, with graphics. Can I get some stock painter recommendations?

Thanks for your help.

Justin

You are correct...Rem 600. Why use a XP? Oh by the way, I hope your talking about a XP100 and not the newer XP100R, it is a Model 7 action.

Hovis,

Thanks! Why the XP? Because I have one! I already have an XP pistol I built in .223, so this one is destined to become a rifle, probably a 20 Tactical.

And it is an old XP in Fireball...still has the brown, Zytel stock. Had it for bout' 20 years.

Sorry but putting an XP into a rifle is a mortal sin to me.
These are very rare pistol actions, especially in CA
Build a BR pistol
Sell the gun and get a rifle action, do not destroy a work of art

You run into some problems when you make an original XP-100 action into a rifle and most of them have to do with the trigger guard and trigger. The 600 is the same action as the XP as far as footprint of the action. The trigger shoe on the 600 action is farther forward than it would be on a 700 trigger. If you drill and tap the little bit of metal behind the trigger on the action for a guard screw to hold the trigger guard, then a 700 trigger won't fit inside a ADL trigger guard. Probably the easiest thing to do is to make a trigger hanger for the action and glue the action into the stock. Then you can mount the trigger guard with escutheons and position it wherever it needs to be to fit the trigger and be able to remove the trigger from the bottom of the stock. I've also seen XP's glued into stocks with holes corresponding to the trigger pins in the side of the stock so that the trigger can be removed from the stock by driving the pins out through the holes in the side of the stock.

Thanks for your reply, Mike. One more question for ya...

If you use a 600 trigger instead of a 700 type trigger, will that fit in an ADL trigger guard?

It would be better. The best way I've seen to attach a trigger guard with a guard screw is to drill and tap a guard screw hole in front of the trigger and then use a tapped escutheon to hold the rear of the trigger guard closest to the pistol grip. Tapping behind the trigger at the tang isn't a good idea as there isn't much metal there. If your stock is inletted for the XP without any inletting for the trigger guard, that would probably be the better way of going as it's pretty simple to mill in a slot for a trigger guard with a 5/8" end mill once it's determined where the trigger guard will need to go. It's just not as simple as building on a 40X action or on. Remington clone. Actually, the best thing would probably be to sell it and put the proceeds towards a custom clone 700 action. Plenty of handgun guys out there who want original XP-100 actions.

Mike,

Thanks for sharing your expertise. I appreciate it.

I don't have a stock for it yet...thought I should figger' out what inletting to specify. Thanks for the tip on the trigger guard.

And the buy the custom 700 clone advice did not go unnoticed, but I had a rifle bolt handle put on this XP already, so I'm kind of married to it.

Thanks,
Justin
