Would you buy one of these Lathes

Looks pretty good to me but you will need tooling and that will likely cost as much or more than the lathe. Here in the U.S., South Bend tooling is readily available used. I don't know about Scotland.

Keep in mind that many Boxford parts and tooling will fit the South Bend as they are almost clones. You may find more Boxfords on your side of the pond? One of the later production 5 inch (10 inch in the U.S.) Boxfords with the 1.375 inch spindle bore would be a nice machine. I have one and I'm very pleased with it.

I have one just about like it ( a 16" )

Mine was made in 65'. That one is a little newer. After market tool holders are had rather cheap thru the American market. Since our dollar is so low in value. Can't wait to go back to Scotland. Thought I'd just add that. :D

Thanks for taking the time to look and reply, he did not get a sale so he has just reduced the price to $1100, tempted I am.

What is the spindle hole diameter? The lathe looks the same as a lot of the lathes that I've seen used for benchrest work. The spindle diameter would let you know if it would work for what you are wanting. A model number wouldn't hurt, such as Heavy 10 or Light 10.

It looks a lot like my Heavy 10". If it is, mine has a spindle bore Id of 1 and 5/8".

Happy turning.:D

Big Al,

Are you sure of the diameter? Heavy 10's Are listed as 1 3/8". Actual measurement on mine is 1.410". A 1 5/8" bore would be weakening the spindle a good bit (my spindle is only 1 3/4" for the outside diameter at the outboard end, although the spindle nose is larger in both the internal and external diameters). Maybe you were referring to the largest diameter of the nose taper which is near 1 5/8"?

Jim

I have taken a chance and bought it at $800:D, will let you know how we get on, once it's installed.
