I have a 54 in 22 hornet. The front sight insert is missing otherwise the rifle is near mint. does anyone know what the original insert looked like?

Many thanks,
John

John Kearns: There were two styles of front sight inserts on the Winchester Model 54 standard Rifle.
One was slid into place front to rear of the Rifle and once in place it was "pinned" in place between an integral raised barrel slit.
The other style was the more traditional style which slid in perpindicular to the length of the barrel - and was friction held in place.
The "pinned front sight" was a Lyman #26W the later front sight is not pinned and was a Lyman 31W.
Best of luck in finding whichever you need.

If it's the M54 with an integral front sight ramp with a dovetail slot that took the Lyman 31W, you can substitute the Winchester 103 that was on the later M70s. I have one--send me a private message if interested.

THanks for the replies. THis front sight is a tube type that uses a knurled retainer which is threaded into the tube to hold a disk type insert which is approx 1/2" in diameter. I hope this isnt an aftermarket add -on. As I mentioned, the rifle is near mint. It would be a shame not to have it all original.

Many thanks

Sounds like a "globe" front sight which was put on after it left the factory. The good news is you can remove it and install either the Lyman 31W or Winchester 103.
