Win mod 70 magazine

Hey all, I have a win mod 70 SA stealth II chambered in 22-250. My problem is to load out to the lands my OAL is way past magazine length. I was looking on Numrich and saw they had post 64 mod 70 magazine boxes, followers, and springs for 308 style cratridges. Would I be able to just swap out these parts on my rifle to extend magazine length, or would I run into other unseen problems.

Thanks
Will

I do not know if this will apply to your rifle:

My Model 70 Classics have a spacer at the rear of the magazine. Care fully remove the spacer, shorten it to the needed length and replace. The bolt clears the entire magazine so picking up the cartridge will not be a problem.

I believe Winchester made only one length magazine and used different length spacers. I do not know if this applies to late models. I did this on a .338 WM Super Grade Classic.

It looks like I could do that pretty easy, I would have to drill a few spot welds, but not a huge deal. I just wonder if I need the longer follower to go with it, to prevent binding.

Magazine boxes for Winchester model 70s

To the best of my knowledge, Winchester only makes one action length. There are at least 3 variations of magazine box. 1. Is medium length with a spacer inside it for shorter cartridges 22-250-308Win. 2. A long box for the 30-06-375 H&H mag, lenght cartridges. 3. An extra long 300 Ultra mag through 404 Jeffrey's case length. With each different length box there is a different length bolt stop.
Kevin Wyatt also makes an aftermarket magazine box for Winchester model 70s. The Montana Rifle company magazine boxes also will fit a Winchester model 70.

what i have found so far

From looking at the parts available on Numrich there are 2 action lengths. A short action (IE the SA at the end of my model number) and a long action. And for my SA there are 3 magazine boxes with matching followers and follower springs. One for 204-223, one specificly for 22-250 (mine), and one for 243- 308- 220swift. Each has a specific part # and details specific factory marking for each group. I was just afraid if I changed the entire box that the feed lips would be to different on the 308 box to still hold back my 22-250, but it souds like the only difference in each box is the spacer.

The bolt stop is a little different on your 22-250. You will have to shorten or replace it when you change the mag box to allow the bolt to move rearward enough to pick up the next case. The SA mag box that will cause you problems would be one from a WSM, it will fit in your action but the lips are a little wide to hold back the standard cases watch for that if your buying used parts.

BTW:There's 3 action lengths available in post64 model 70's long, short and super short. The super short was made the last couple of years before the big Winchester shut down.

Thanks Jay

Thats one thing I was worried about. I have swapped savages back and forth from 223 to 308 and have had to change the bolt baffle but with the one piece bolt on the Win I knew this wasnt an option. The bolt seems to travel to the back of the spacer but I hate to put $50 into a new stainless mag box to find out it doesnt work. I think Im going to try shortening the spacer the .20" i need and if I have to I will get the 308 follower and shorten it to fit my moified box.

Thanks All

Will,
The WSM mag will work just fine if you happen to run on to 1 of them. I looked all I have is a 22-250 box, I was in the same predicament once. I made my rifle into a single shot.

I had my mind on the after market Rem700 mags when I said the feed lips might be to wide to hold back a standard case. Some times they have to be rebent to work right.

I don't know why this was suddenly on my mind today but for some reason I went back and reread my post. I hope I didn't mislead anyone to bad.
