Why would you not seat

the bullet when you chamber the round, Seat the bullet just slightly with a seater die and then chamber the round and let the bolt seat the bullet further. Bad practise ? Why?

One reason if your neck tension is fairly high and you need to remove an un fired round the bullet may stick in the riflings and fill your chamber full of powder

What you end up with the method that you have described is the bullet at jam (old school short range benchrest definition) which may not be the seating depth that produces the best accuracy in the rifle that you are working with, with the powder and bullet that you are using. Would that finding the best seating depth was that simple. I have a friend that has gotten very good results that way, with a powder that does not need much neck tension for best results, but then again I have seen him get stumped when that approach did not produce results, because he had not put in the time leaning the subtleties involved in tuning with seating depth. The point about dumping powder in the action is also well taken.

I thinks

I think there is a good probability that the bullet will seat at different depths with this method. I think the idea of jam is a seating depth that will be consistent . I start at touch using a case with a threaded rod to find touch. Regardless of which method I am looking for seating depth that is less sensitive to powder charge as the day changes, and it all most always does. I finally have enough barrels and just 2 years experience ( using same reamer and bullet ( Bart's 68 BT)) to know where a new barrel should shoot if it is going to. At least that is what I tell myself.

Don.t know about the game you shoot but I seated long for 17 years in the Palma Game and 308 Win cal. I used .020 long and turned necks with .0005 to .001 neck tension. Remember to work the loads up from the long seat.
My idea behind the long seat is to let the expensive chamber do the work for me.

I listen to the guys that win the matches and copy what they do. Most of the HOF guys will answer your questions if you ask politely.

Yes still 80. Degrees!

The last time I shot competition was in 1978 at Visalia and Harvey Miller said it would not work but I shot a .216 at 200, but who knows if that was the reason?

If there is any thought that that may happen, expend the round.

If it's during a match put it into the sighter or if the relay has concluded ask the match Direction for permission to do so.

I'll expend the powder and bullet any day vice removing a bullet stuck in the barrel and cleaning a chamber full of powder kernels that like to get into every nook and cranny there is. :)

If the rifle shoots there...

AND....you don't mind cleaning powder out of the action now and then...it's a pretty good way to go. On the other hand, the rifle will very likely shoot just as well with enough neck tension to extract the entire round. I'm gonna say to use this "seat when chambering" method to finish a match, then make new cases when you get home. If you don't have time to make new cases, then that's OK...but you run the risk of a cease fire/remove bolts deal...and that ain't good.....ever....

I do

I seat a bullet with full neck tension pull it and seat to that length.the tought being the chamber lands etc align the bullet if im making wonky rounds
