Hi Nipper,

I have been at this game pushing 14 years. Here in New England we are shut down for about five months of the year. You can't imagine the anticipation of the first Spring match of the year. To get together with old friends and perhaps meet a few new along the way...it can't be beat.

To touch off that fist scoreing shot of the season is a rush too.

That's all there is...there's no second best reason

Wilbur, you forgot to mention all the money to be made. Some of the matches I attend pay as much as $5.00 for the win!

What Wilbur and Al said. Nothing better than the people in this game. Second for me would be the challenge of shooting a good target in tricky conditions.

Why all the Fun?

When you first arrive at a shoot, a bunch of nice guys and gals fill you up with coffee and donuts. Next, they make sure you have all the equipment you need and if you forgot something, even a gun, they will loan you one. Then you spend the next thirty minutes setting up all your gear and all the locals tell you the nuiances of the range. Finally, you get to start shooting which usually goes on for about three hours. The targets are scored, you come in last, everyone offers condolences. ("This range takes awhile to get used to.")
After getting your brains beat out, they serve you up a meal better than anything you've had since the last shoot you went to.

Ain't this benchrest shooting FUN? Hell, it's more addictive than heroin, cocaine and whiskey combined!! Can't wait for the next shoot. Fred

Well Said !!

Fred, Thats the way I remember it. Iv only shot one formal match. It was a IR 50/50 match. I showed up with sand bags, a BRNO mod. 4, and 2 customized Ruger 77/22's, no wind flags and I had a blast! I did'nt finish last, but I did finish in the bottom half. I will never forget the good time I had that day. Charlie V.

i am looking foward to shooting with many of you, n.c. isnt far,i go to mooresville all the time, also chattonooga tn. and birmingham al. and shefffield al. as well.

nipper,
You're welcome to come shoot IR5050 3-gun matches at Blue Ridge(WIlkesboro, NC) with us when you're in NC. Check the IR5050 3-gun schedule for the dates.

Me too . . .

I've been at this since 1958: Centerfire/Rimfire Benchrest and NRA Smallbore. It just keeps getting better and better. The wins don't come as often at the age of 77, but the friendships and social exchanges make for a strong bond with other shooters. This game is FUN.

Mr. Frosty :)

Yeah, but second place isn't too bad! Good shooting yesterday, I can't wait to get up there in August.:D

Well Mooseyard . . .

I tied with Leo Hedger, who is 76. Those Jones boys are younger and tougher.

Joe :)

Joe,

At 77, you'd think you'd be allowed to set your target about 5 yards closer. Older guys get to tee-off about 5 yards closer on the golf course, seems like it would only be right to allow over-seventy shooters to have closer targets at benchrest matches.

What am I saying? That would cover about half the shooters these days! Forget it! :)

For me it's a combination of many things, yes the fine folks you meet at the matches are very important, getting to compete against them at a game we all love makes up part of the equation, and then there's the challege/goals.

The last is one of the important aspects for me for I really enjoy finding solutions to reach my goals. Since I've just hit my one year anniversary at this game I have a lot to learn and I try to put effort in doing so.
The challege I find is trying to understand what's wrong and/or what's not working. e.g. of this is at the last match I was at I was doing some tuneup work on my rifle scope, the match before the wind was real, real bad and I had to make some major changes with it to even keep shots on the paper that day. Get it reset where I want it then work with a couple of lots of ammo. Get the one that appears to be looking good and run a row of shots taking out the dot for each bull so I'm ready to go. Start target one, couple of sighters, looks good and move out to the first bull and boom a 25, (ARA). Now for the next two targets I'm searching trying this and that etc... at the end of the second target I still have about 5 minutes on the clock and make another ammo change and start working on the tuner, minor for I'm confident it's in the general neighborhood of being close but just a few clicks to bring it in. Third target get a solid 2300. End up finishing 2nd for the day so point being, derived a solution for what didn't look good in the start. That's the challege for me. My goals I set are pretty simple. Finish in the top 3 at Matches and top 1/3 of the field at Tournaments. Secondary goals are beating my top target score and agg for a match.
