With all the noise from capitol hill about CEO's pay why don"t these fine elected officals show the way by voting a pay cut for themselves??

Where do you get off, deciding............

WHAT these folks get paid??? Who ARE you?? Of ALL the NERVE!!!! We HAVE to pay these people what they receive. Why, don't you realize if we don't reward them, the old saying kicks in, "Well, you have to pay them that, or we couldn't get good people to serve." Hell, pay me half as much, I'll take the medical & half the retirement, and make the statement, "If I don't make things better for the people, working within the Constitution, AS IT IS WRITTEN, I'd expect to be tried and shot." I'll build my OWN house & pay for the improvements, no worries there; where do I sign an' where's the guy doin' the swearin' in deal??? :D:D;) Why, you have some NERVE suggesting such a thing!! You should be ashamed!! ;);)

congress

Point of fact, they gave themselves a pay raise. When the evil Republicans tried to get a vote against the pay raise, they were vastly outvoted......
Greg

Well I was told back in high school civics class that these guys worked for me seems like I could at least dock their pay or something.

SORRY, tbang, they DIDN'T vote..................

themselves a raise; Cost of living adjustments(COLAs) and pay raises are automatic, AUTOMATIC.....they have to vote NOT to take those raises. This way, see, they can honestly say to their constituents, "Well,(ahem), I NEVER voted for that pay raise, the way things are out here for decent working folks, why, it'd be unCONSCIONABLE to vote for a pay raise now; why, I couldn't LIVE with myself if I did something so heartless." Is there a fox in the ol' HEN HOUSE, dear readers????:D;) And one other thing, 'case y'all never gave it a thought, that pay CAN'T be that great, if it was better, then those guys n' gals wouldn't have to take all those BRIBES an' FREE TRIPS an' good lookin' wimmen an' (Monica Lewinsky is excused from this discussion) stuff. Hell, its HARD TO MAKE A LIVING as a poor ol' CONgress man, y'know????

I guess everyone here knows about the "retention bonuses" that some people at AIG got to the tune of $165 million, and the ACORN led protests about them.

Did anyone hear that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac executives recently got $200 million in retention bonuses, and more interestingly there were no protests over those? Like the $100 million that Franklin Raines got a couple of years ago and Jamie Gorelick's ~$26 million for their work driving Fannie and Freddie into the ground these were wonderful and paid to the friends of those in power in DC.

When I saw that blathering, blubbery, sissy Bawney Fwank carrying on about the AIG bonuses I wondered if he'd have been willing to work for $1/year with the promise of a bonus based on performance. With his performance the $1 would likely be taken away.

Sir, I stand (sit) corrected!! Indeeeed you are right! The evil
Republicans tried to get a vote to not take the AUTOMATIC pay raise, and were vastly outvoted or slapped down so as not to allow the vote.

It is still the same effect, but more disgustingly, as you so accurately pointed out, it allows them to essentially lie without lieing about it. Sadly, most people don't pay enough attention. They listen to the slant of the media, which doesn't challenge the people/ideologies they favor and assume they got the whole story.

Now, my fine, wonderful gift from God, in the form of my 18 year old son, is going to read this. And Brian, he is going to see that I failed to get a detail correct. As much as I have preached to him about ATTENTION TO DETAIL:mad:, and he is going to realize that I am not always 100% accurate. Worse, that I am sometimes fallible.
This is gonna hurt. But I would rather have all the facts accurately presented. Thank you.

Brian, you might like this Mark Twain quote. "Suppose I was an idiot, and suppose I was a member of congress, but I repeat myself"

Take care!
Greg

i would be happy if they just used the social security retirement plan
and medicare plan like almost all americans do, instead of their own
plans, they made the government workers go to the social security plan
why shouldn't they. i could see a pension plan similar to armed forces
where upon 20 years service you would get half pay and 5% for every
2 years past that. what's wrong with that? what's good for the average
american should be good enough for them.

Hey Greg, can't call them idiots due to the clever way they diguised the cost of living increases, now the rest of it. Do you or are you aware that once any congresional member serves one term they are guaranteed that income for the rest of their lives, even if no longer serving.

Not that our representatives

deserve the money they are paid, but, take a look at the amount of money we gave to other countries in 2008. It makes the salary of a congressman look like minimum wage.
Iraq-$10 Billion
Israel-$2.8 Billion
Egypt- $1.7 Billion
Pakistan-$798 Million
Jordan-$688 Million
Kenya-$586 Million
South Africa-$574 Million
Mexico-$551 Million
Colombia-$540 Million
Nigeria- $493 Million
Sudan-$479 Million

I have no doubt missed a few others. No wonder we can't afford to help our own people.

Hey, Greg, we learn from our mistakes...........

show it to your son to let him see that none of us are infallible, he'll probably respect you more(maybe, i dunno;)). Hey Blades, get this, not only what you mentioned about their pension, but they also get lifetime MEDICAL benefits, too!! Also, on one segment of "60 Minutes", one congressman, who had retired at something like 130 grand a year, had gotten survivor's benefits from his dead wife's CIA(Cocaine Import Agency)pension,(they die, their spouse gets their pension for LIFE, too.) plus, I believe her social security(somehow he was getting social security) and COLAs and RAISES, yep, retired CONGs get the same raises. Long story short, this guy was knockin' down 240 GRAND a year. And, I can see how he'd NEED it, to maintain the house he had. Now, I'm not for being a COMMIE an' taking it away, BUT, I don't think we need to create an "American Aristocracy of Thieves and Charlatans". Starting to look like the Brit-*hits around here. And speaking about the "Compound" at Waco, did you ever see shots of Bob Hope's joint?? The Branch Davidian's place PALES at comparison. Oh, yeah, Hope never gave up his Brit-*hit passport. 'Course I gotta admit, he did all those USO shows, but of course he owned ALL the broadcast rights to them, too, so whenever one was shown on TV, he got big bucks!!! Hey, I don't mind anybody makin' a living, or even BIG bucks, but don't tell me you're doing it for altruistic reasons, when you're actually doin' it for, THE BIG BUCKS!!! :rolleyes:EOR;)

I'd be happy if the elected representatives had the same retirement plan that current civil service employees have. Social security plus a "thrift savings plan" (TSP) that would allow them to put up to 10% of their pay before taxes and if they put in 10% the government will put in 5% "matching". When they get enough "saved" they could retire. Oh and they could have the same health plan as civil service employees too, so they'd get to pay 40% (I think it is) of the insurance payment a year. As it is now they don't put in anything towards their retirement, get el supremo health insurance for free, plus a TSP. They don't deserve the retirement that the military has, but maybe they could get the same health plan that military retirees get, which isn't too hot from what I understand.

Regardless of their high opinion they mostly hold of themselves they're not royalty. They work for us, not the other way around.

I could be wrong

I may be wrong, but I believe that one term in the House or Senate and you get the salary and bennies for life. Be that as it may, the thing most people don't understand (2 things, actually)..............
1. These folks seem to think the average American needs to be spoon fed. Without them we would just flounder and sink.
2. Don't ever waste your time voting for a Presidential candidate.......Really..........Spend your time on the Congressional elections!!!
After all, the Pres just asks congress if it would not be too much trouble for them to allow him to do xxxxxxxxxxxxxx and they either say Yes or No.
The President is nothing more than the spokesperson for the Congress!

It's seven years in office. For a house member that means elected to office four times. For a member of the senate that means elected twice.

That is the means to the wealth, and a life time of the best free medical care in the world for the member and spouse.

Currently for a member of the pension that qualify for the pension and health care, makes a minimum north of 8,000.00 per month for life. With ever increasing cost of living raises.
