Your local auto body shop should be able to do a first class job when they paint the next repair job.

Gunner,

Have you actually tried this? I've got a Shehane Obeche sitting here that I'm planning to send off to Mike Ricklefs clear over to Ioway........... if a body shop will REALLY do it, there's twenty of them in my area. I didn't bother checking with them.

Shoot, I've even got my own spray outfit and I won't touch it.

Al,

Don't send that stock all the way to Ioway................there's them here local that can do what you want. Call me and we'll see what we can do.

Thanks Mark :)

It's the blocking out that I'm worried about, getting all of the pores to disappear. I need to be sure that I can get fill without speckles. I'm trained to fill the pores with sanding dust and stain but this thing's gotta' be shot and block-sanded and shot and blocked and shot until she's FLAT and still clear!

BTW, I DO NOT have my BAT yet! That's why I haven't called you. I've got the barrel. I've got the stock cut down to length and squared up, I've even got the holes drilled in the butt but I can't go any further until we gets an action fitted up.

I got all my Borden stuff back. I'm trying to find time to put the stock together so's I can try out the 6.5X47L blown out to 30, another fun project just setting there.......

But right now I'm trying to get the big 6X47 tamed down. This Sat I have to settle on a technique and practice-practice-practice.

Al, I have inletted, sanded, and painted several fiber glass stocks with modern automotive paint. I do not use the clear cote for a filler. Bondo and the paint do the job and when it is all done then the clear cote.

A body shop might not be the best route. I went to Mike Kav to do my Obeche Tracker. Last I spoke to him he was going in the Navy. The pores must be fill and blocked flat. I do stocks myself but it was easier to just ship it out. Regualr wood isnt hard to do but the Obeche is very light almost like balsa. Its a pain to fill. Call Bill Shehane and see who he recommends. You want to use a high quality auto clear like Glasuirt,Diamont or Spies.

Yeahhh Kav's gone for a while.

I've done hotrods, I've done boats and fiberglass stocks. I've got an automotive spray setup in my shop.

I'll probably try Ricklefs

I wish I would have seen this post before our match today. i could have shown you the one I just did.
For the clear coat is in the pre sanding. I worked up to 600 grit. Then applyed a sandable sealer. (have to make sure it will work with the clear coat you will be using, go to woodcrafters).
I cut the first coat 50/50 with denatured alchol. let dry and then sanded back down to 600 grit tell it was not shiny again.
I applyed a full strenght coat of sealer, let dry and sanded back to 600 grit.

Then I shot it with auto clear. I would not go less than 14 coats. After it drys and hardens, say 24 hours. start with 1000 grit sandpaper and wet sand it with a block all the way to 1500-2000 grit paper.

After sanding get some auto polish and hand rub it to the polish you want.

Al, I am with you. It looks like there is a learning curve here and some degree of art involved. How much can UPS charge for a round trip to someone who is good at this skill? Well that's good insurance.
