I need to replace the recoil pad on a classic Rem 700 in .338.
The oringal pad is hard. What recoil pads do you recomend.
It does not have to be a pre-fit pad.

There are a few soft ones on the market but I still prefer the Pachmayer Decelerator recoil pad... either the smooth back or the basket weave...

Ditto (again) on the..................

Decelerator.
On the .338, I would use the 1" Decelerator, even if I had to trim the stock a bit.

Then, I'd only store the rifle right-side-up, down on the muzzle end. Keeps those pads from taking a "set".

A gunsmith I know who has to do a lot of work with rifles chambered for the .338 Lapua recommends the Pachmayer XLT. I've used one, and am happy. His sample size was a lot bigger.

I've used pads made of sorbothane, like Decelerator. As somebody said, it takes a set. In my case, with a 17-pound rifle, a bulge. Ways around that -- store it muzzle down, or have a removable pad. Did I mention it was a big, ugly bulge?
