Which Primer Is Best?

I am deciding which primer is best for my 300 Win Mag. The Federal 215 Magnum or the Federal GM 215 Magnum Match.

Does anyone prefer one and why?

Is this for a hunting rifle or a match rifle? Most people I know do not use magnum primers for 300 Win Mag match rifles.

The primers you list are likely the same other than Federal may take extra precautions with the match primers that may make them more consistent.

I do not use magnum primers in anything I shoot and I have cases that hold as much as 100 grs of powder. This is all match stuff though and not shot in very cold conditions.

I haven't seen one lick of difference between them. I ran out of GM early in the season last year and switched to regular 215's, and actualy shot better. Of course, I was a rookie, and it might have been the fact that I was getting better as the season progressed. Who knows???? I have 2000 more regular primers left, and will shoot them before I buy any match primers. Trust me, if I thought they were that big a deal, I would trash the non match primers and buy the GM!!

Hope this helps,

Well you got closer to the right forum! To answer your question without going into more detail than you need to try and digest the 300 will most definitely benefit from the 215M. I shoot 1k BR and almost all of my rifles use the 215M’s from the match ones to the sporters. The 6.5x284 is as small as I go save a couple of 6BR’s that I have to shoot SR with the 215M is the primer of choice to start my load development with. In fact, last weekend used it exclusively with my 6.5 WSM development (round 2) and several 5 shot strings that varied less than 10fps (WMR, RL19 and RL22) and this is not uncommon when developing data for a new chambering. One reason that at least for me the 215M’s are the foundation of 90% of my reloading activities.:)

to be honest, we need to know more about your build? if its a hunting rifle that you shoot once a year and only need to hit the x on the paper a few times then buy the cheapest you can, if it goes any deeper than that post it to us and I am sure you will get all of the help you will need.

Did you ever try the standar primers in your Weatherby? and if yes how did they shoot?

I put a new firing pin assembly in my 300 Ackley and plan on trying them again if it ever quits raining out here.I had hangfire problems with the Fed210M in two different 300 Ackleys in 80+ degree weather out here.

My problem is that it can be 100 degrees colder than your 85 degrees where I shoot. I might try tinker with some 210s for shooting matches, but it is usualy cold up here in the spring when I do most of my load development. Not 20 below, mind you, but 30 to 40 degrees is not uncommon. I may try them this summer when I know it will be 60+ degrees. I know a lot of guys are getting their bigger magnums to shoot with the non-magnum primer. I thought about trying them last season, but I had a great load with the 215's. Also....I saw how fast I was going to shoot out my only bbl. I didn't know if I could finish the season with my bbl., so I did ZERO load development after I found my load. This was very hard for me because I usualy have a moderate to severe case of tinkeritis. :D. I know I could have improved things had I tinkered because my gun shot BETTER without the muzzle brake!!! I shot free recoil with the break and held the gun without it. It was either the load or my technique.....but either way, I needed more practice time. Next year I will have my current bbl (1200 rounds...still shooting good), 2 new 30 cals, and one 6.5 to work with. So.................either I have the potential to find a truly great load/bbl combination, or....the potential to totaly screw things up because I will have to many things to worry about!!!!:eek: I do know that I will have BIG fun trying.

TIME WILL TELL.

In my experience with cold weather(30 degrees or colder)and large capacity magnums you will need magnum primers to get good ignition. I do not shoot long range competition this is from testing hunting loads and guns so this advice might be worth what you paid for it, nothing. Some testing on your part is the only way you will know for sure. Steve
