I'm new to the form. Would to try .22 bench rest shooting and now i'm trying to decide which rifle to purchase. the remington 40-x seems to be one good choice used with a good 36x scope (also what are the good scopes and mounts?). I'm also intrested in the Feinwerkbau 2700 Super Match Target Rifle. Can these rifles be purchased with no sights and with good mounts?

I currently am trying a Kimber 82 G that i picked up for almost nothing and will begin testing this week with target ammo of different brands. The Kimber may end up being a steel gun instead of bench rest.

Appreciate any thoughts and experience you have with both the 40-x and the Feinwerkbau 2700 Super Match Target Rifle.

Just for some background on me: began shooting with the NRA program back in the 60's and finished my expert rating. 62 years old so now i have both the time and the money to enjoy retirement. I live in King George Virginia and belong to the Fredericksburg Rod & Gun which has ranges from 25 to 200 yards. Also enjoy reloading and shooting big bore rifles. Just shot a 1/2" 100 yard group with my 375 H&H. These were reloads.

Thanks ahead of time.

Check out Killough Shooting Sports. Dan will sometimes have a ready to shoot custom or modified factory rifle that is ready to shoot. Dan is also a great choice for ammo and accessories. Any of those you mentioned will cost you more to make competitive.

Tom Cat,

Fred is trying to lead you right. Dan Killough is easy to talk to and he always has a few good custom rifles on hand. Many of us have started out with factory rifles and moved on to custom rifles. I started with a CZ 452 and learned a lot about the wind and ammo with it. I moved on to a new Remington 40X that I still have with the second custom barrel, a custom stock, a squared action, a Jewell trigger and a tuner. After all the changes, I now have a rifle that can be competitive. I think the 40X action is a good place to start but I would have spent less if I had started our with a custom in the first place. The trick is getting any rifle even a custom built rifle shoot good and you learning how to shoot it.

Show up, next week end at the ARA Nationals, Bench Rest Barn in N.C. There will be several nice rifles for sale that you can test and you will see some great people and shooters for advice. At least buy and test some MATCH ammo.

+1 for Dan.

He is just finishing a custom rifle for me with the Falcon as the action. He is friendly, answers all kinds of questions/e-mails and charges a fair price for a real custom job. I just picked up the phone and called him one day when I was ready to drop the cash.

Cheers,

thanks for all of the direction. i will be talking to Dan today. hope to see some of you guys at upcoming matches...

Glad to hear you went that route. You'll be happy I think. I just have one more day to wait before UPS drops off my custom rifle - whoohoo!!!
