Which Caliber?

Couple of PCP Air Gun questions:

1. What are the pluses/minuses of .177 vs .22

2. Are the barrels rifled?

3. Do the hand-powered air pumps really work?

4. Does the compressed air generate moisture?

Thanks ...

1. .177 better BC, if that matters
.22 heavier pellet, less wind drift, bigger hole

2. Yes

3. Yes, plenty of exercise

4. Compressed air does not generate moisture.

Hand pumps, best to have one with a replaceable moisture pak as you are drawing in ambient air from your surroundings. With a hand pump condensation does occur within the system. I could ( have switched to scuba tanks) pump up my match pistol tanks in a fairly short session. The rifle tanks required multiple sessions. reasons, 1. to not give myself a heart attack from over exertion and 2. let the system cool down a bit. The hand pumps of my vintage get quite warm and the tank also, just the nature of compression. Heat is the enemy of seals in pumps. I have multiple units and hand pumping got old real quick, not a big deal on the match units as typically 100 plus shots per charge, but on higher power units like the Discovery or Marauder ( Crossman mfg) 50% or so less.

Well,

1. The .22's normally have a better BC, but its often easier to get higher quality pellets in .177. If you are shooting at 25yards/meters at higher power, say 20fpe and under, I think they are a tossup, as I see good work done with either, but stay away from .22 models if low powered (under 15fpe) and stay away from .177 if high powered (well over 20fpe). I think a longer ranges, the .22 is usually better.

2. Yes, the barrels are usually well rifled, though there is one company that only rifles the last inch or so (yet it still works ok).

3. Do the hand-powered air pumps really work? Yes, but they tend to be strenuous to operate and don't hold up well. Its REALLY difficult to service them properly and maybe just as difficult to GET them serviced properly. Also, they tend to allow moisture to get in your gun if the weather is humid.

4. Does the compressed air generate moisture? Compression of air DOES tend to create issues with moisture ... since it heats the air, and hot air hold more moisture than cool air. Once the compressed air cools, some of the moisture "falls out" of suspension. Good compressors, such as used in dive shops have a series of water traps to deal with the issue, but most I haven't seen air from small units and handpumps to be as "dry" in comparison.

My apologies, the BC is typically better with .22 pellets than .177, .030 -.032 vs. .022 -.024.

However, some of the best, most consistent, in terms of head size and weight, pellets of recent vintage are .22 caliber. Specifically, the early lot Cometa pellets were excellent.

Well, I have both.. I shoot a .22 cal stainless steel barrel at 26.5 fpe with JSB and Air Arms version 16gr.... but I didn't like the way it shot at 19.5fpe in HV class, as much as my .177 cal at that energy... and for sure I want to shoot .177 at 12fpe LV class.. So pick which Class you are starting out shooting, and then choose your caliber.. in my humble opinion:).. My guess is .177 will due better for you at 25 meters, in HV 20fpe class, and .22 cal with the right gun and barrel would do better at 50 yards and up to 35fpe... which is our "Open Class" power limit, but my gun shoots better at 26.5fpe in .22cal.

Keep in mind also that one needs to shoot about 30-35 shots on a fill for HV and LV classes.. (25 for record, and 5-10 sighters).. But, I guess we are allowing tethering to tanks for the Open class now..

Really, I wouldn't fool around with pumps, if you can get tanks filled close by. Pumps can get water in your gun and do fail when you need them most.. and after pumping, your heart is going so fast.. how could you possible shoot well?

Tethering allowed? I guess you won't be seeing me at your matches then.

my 22 and 25 maruader shoot great, i have a breathing air compressor at work and have 2 4500 psi scba tanks

Don't get me wrong LD, I'm not for tethering in any class... and at all my local matches we won't allowing tethering.. I'm just saying what Steve George has said were going to be doing for the Scoreline he's running here..
