Which Barrel Profile?

Curious

New member
Ive just recieved a new McMillan Sako Varmint stock for a Tikka 595. The outlet I got it from told me the barrel channel was for a Sako varmint profile barrel but it isn't, its nothing like a Sako varmint barrel as Ive tried one and its nowhere near.

Can anyone give me a barrel profile that will be a good fit in this stock, my barrel maker can profile the barrel I have for it if I can give him a pattern. If anyone has a contour then it will save me measuring and drawing a profile up. What are you using in these stocks guys?

Generally the stock is opened up to match the barrel contour.....is this stock too slender? I've fitted probably 5 "McMillan Sako Varmint" stocks through the years and they were all wikkid meaty thru the forend....

The barrel channel is big enough now to take a varmint barrel its just the Sako varmint profile doesn't fit, its too tight around the chamber area. I dont want to modify the stock when I have a barrel maker happy to profile my barrels to fit these stocks, I would like to find out the appropriate contour, someone must know?

He's looking for that 'custom kit' gun.

When I order a McMillan varmint stock, I specify the contour of the barrel that is going in it. Evidently, who you bought it from thought it was inletted for a Sako Varmint barrel channel. Since you say it won't fit, then who knows what barrel channel it has. I'd suggest measuring the cylinder length and diameter, the diameter at the forend and trying to figure out what barrel will fit in it. Other wise, I'd just get a Remington varmint contour barrel and mill the barrel channel to fit the barrel. Different strokes for different folks. If it's too tight around the chamber area, then I'd just turn down the cylinder part of the barrel to fit the stock. I've done that quite often with Sakos or Winchesters.

Thanks for the helpful answer Mike.

Im quite new to building rifles so I run into things like this quite often.

I didn't realise that McM Sako Varmint stocks would/could leave the factory with different barrel channels. I was told by the retailer that they ordered them in Tikka 595 for example that they would have a Tikka varmint channel but this doesn't seem to be the case as I have 2 Tikka varmint take of barrels and also a Sako varmint take off, all are almost identical and they dont fit the channel.

Making a barrel fit is easy enough, I just wanted to see if there was a profile out there which would save me the trouble. :)
