the social groups in the profiles?

I don't really know. After reading your post I checked my profile and found two social groups listed. I entered them and deleted them. I have no idea how they got there or their purpose or how they work. It may just be a feature of the software this site uses...

Probably to group people you would like to send a message to all at once, like for example if you were a site moderator.
