Whats the problem?

What do I need to know? As a new shooter, I have ben reading up on your sport thinking this might be fun to try. I have always wondered what its like to be able to shoot 600 or even 1000 yards. It sounds like so much fun. I started doing my research and noticed the epuiptment you use is very expensive but I have the money to buy or build the guns to get into the sport. Before I invest all my time and effort into this sport can some one tell me why I should or should not?

As I was doing my reseach for example I click on the Forum and read the first post which says which 6mm would you build. The guy gives all his specks of what he wants to build then someone ask him a question and maybe I read it wrong but they asked what the gun would be used for? In my opinion he replied back with a smart ass answer this is benchrest central isnt it? Well if I new something about this sport why would I even want to try to help this guy out?

I go to the next post which is titled TVP some one is new to benchrest shooting just like I am and is asking questions about a match. Then someone slams the owner of the range and posts all kind of personal information about him? What the hell? Where is the moderators?

I read the next post titled 2010 1000yd and 600yd SOY points someone answers the post with another comment Ya James, Things never seem to change unless people get upset and raise a fuss. I'm still waiting to see the rookie, Jr, Female SOY for 2009 600yd game. I have already seen the 1,000yd. Wonder if anyone will remember to track those awards this year and present them? Good luck on this year's SOY points rules.

I read the IBS rule book it seems to be upfront and easy to understand. I just dont undestand the hate of the sport. I would think of what little shooters show up for matches that you guys would want to grow your sport instead of trying to ruin it. What do I need to know? What am I missing?

Paul,

You are spot on. I was looking at the TVP post you mentioned. Go back and read it again. I added my two cents on the matter. Sorry, I couldn't help it....it just torqued me to no end!!!!

This is, by far, the best source of quality info on everything you will ever need to know on LR shooting . I was new in 2008. I ended up 3rd in the IBS shooter of the year points race and was IBS rookie of the year.

Did I have a great gun....yep.

Did I have a couplete hammer of a barrel......absolutely!!!

Is Clay Spencer a great Smith.......A big hell yes.

BUT.....BUT.......I would have gotten nowhere without the help I got off of this fourm. Great peope.....most are wourld class shooters. I also got a bunch of help at the matches.

I try and give back some now. Example..... I was at the Harris 1K match this weekend and saw a guy and his son looking around and watching the goings on. I visited with him a little and found out he was interested in getting started in LR shooting. I convinced him to take my spare gun and shoot the afternoon matches. I scrounged some rests from some of the other shooters and he was off to the races. Of course, no good deed goes un-punished.....this poor guy had everything go wrong....NONE of which were his fault.....like his son is pulling the targets for him (it was his first time in the pits)......the first 3 min is shooting clay birds on the berm...the second three is done on targets. Well ..he couldn't figure out why he was hitting the clays, but when the targets came up he was not hitting the target....it turned out that his son didn't have a red spotting disk and didn't want to bother anyone about it.....he just pulled the target and pasted the bullet holes. The shooter, mean while, was diling and holding in every direction possible. He also didn't want to bother anyone. He continued to hold all over the place and dial during the 5 record rounds.

HE GOT ALL 5 ON PAPER!!!!!!!!! IN KRAPPY CONDITIONS NO LESS!!!!!!

Anyway.......my point is.....stick around....good fourm....GREAT people......heck, you might even learn to tollerate ME!!!!!

And.....get your tail to a match...way big fun!!

Good luck,
Tod Soeby

If you enjoy shooting build your rifle 99% of the people you will meet in this sport are great people and will offer you all the help you need getting started. And your right it is a lot of fun to shoot 600 & 1000 yards

Tod,

I read your post and I think there should be more guys out there like you that try and run the bad guys off. Im not sure what is going on with this forum and even this sport. I've ben reading about the general clubs in my area and ask my self the question just like I stated on this post

WHATS GOING ON??????????????

I read that there are many issues at North Carolina, Virginia is shooting at west virginia?? What about Ohio??????????? What in the world is going on there ??? People are posting that some guy is behind on his property taxes and has ben to court a few times because of his propety taxes. What in the world am I thinking about geting my self into? Im going to invest $10000 plus dollars in a light gun and hevy gun to shoot with a bunch of guys that cry and complain about everything? Im just looking to learn something here. I have always had the desire to learn how to shoot long range but I have to ask my self again what am I getting my self into? I dont have a good feeling about this.

My attitude is the following I read the post about the guy that is complaining about shooter of the year. Quote: Ya James, Things never seem to change unless people get upset and raise a fuss. What the Hell??? The guy should of posted or emaild someone saying hey im interested in shooter of the year results is there anything i can do to help get the results out faster?

Maybe I take a different prospective on life but where ever I go and no matter what im doing I try to make the world a better place for the next person. Here are three example of what I did today. My wife and I were traveling home from visiting her family we stoped at Wendys restarunt and I noticed there was an empty bag of trash laying on the ground in the parking lot. I picked it up and put it in the trash can no big deal right. After lunch we went to the grocery store I noticed a shopping cart left in the middle of the parking lot so I went and brought the cart back to the store. After shopping with my wife I went and played golf at the local country club. I noticed that the flags on the course were old and faded. Instead of making a huge fuss about it I approached the golf pro and said I noticed a lot of the flags on the course look old and faded I would like to buy some new flags for the course. The pro thanked me and I made the golf course a better place for the next person to play once the new flags come in. Do I want an award for doing this hell no. I did it because it was the right thing to do. Im sure there is no money in benchrest shooting no one is getting rich here. Guys this is your hobbie what you do for fun. What are you doing to support your club? To make it better for the next person who wants to shoot. We have Obamma in the white house trying to take away our guns and people have this attitude??? I feel like sending the guy in Ohio some money or asking him how I can help him have a more successful club so others can enjoy the sport and have the same oppertunity to have as much fun as I did.

This is a simple concept. Come on guys

Sorry to rant and rambel but this isnt kindergarden. I guess im going to show up at some matches and see how it goes before I purchase a buch of equiptment and have no place to shoot because people cant get along.

Paul,
Although it may seem like it, I in no way want to run anyone off. I am here to learn and share what little I can. That is it.
Also, I am not saying we should all get together and do a group hug once a day to promote....whatever.... Just keep whatever hatered you have for something to a minimum, unles it is OBAMA bashing (I haven't quite figured out how to get the little green laughing guy to show up, but ...insert here...).

Welcome to the sport of...

... long range benchrest shooting, Paul.

I have been playing the game since late '98. It has afforded me many pleasant memories and friendships that I will long cherish. I have shot in Va., NC, Ohio, Pa., and last year the Nationals at Iowa.

I would advise you to go to a match, look around at the equipment, the choice of calibers and so on, to form your own ideas as to how you would like to get into it.

The vast majority of the folks in the sport will help you without even thinking twice about it. There is however, unfortunately, a very vocal minority that will make it seem that all we have is egotistical battles going on. There is more to it than that I assure you. Every range has some little conflict going on most of the time, but that is just human nature with the ability to voice differences of opinion. Sometimes it goes a bit overboard.

This case here on the forum is one of those that will go on and on, like the Hatfields & McCoys fued of days gone by. It will never be resolved by the two principles, because of the egos posessed.

Please do not let this behavior turn you away from the sport. You will find it very easy to make new friends here, guaranteed.

Good luck,
Danny

You are right about some smart aleck answers. I think some people fail to read the question correctly and some people just can't seem to help themselves.
After you have been on here awhile you will find the people that give sound advice and ignore the others. Most of the experienced shooters know more than one way to do something and will share it while some posters adopt a my way is the only way attitude.
I personally do not get into arguments about how it is done, not worth the effort.
