What's the magic temp for annealing?

I've heard several, vastly different, ideal temperatures to anneal ranging from 600 to 900. The majority of articles mention somewhere between 650 and 750 degrees as being desireable, so which one is right?

Specify the steel

Every type of steel has a different annealing temperature. If we are talking a "gun steel" here such as 4140/4340 the annealing temperature is 680-720*C for 4140 and 650-700*C for 4340. Soak for 1 hour and use furnace control cooling 15-20*C per hour until 570*C and then cool the steel freely in the air. Maximum hardness about 24HRC.

I think we can assume the material is cartridge brass.

A good point Joel

I've thought that I was in the "Gunsmith Corner"
