I have seen a lot of threads lately dealing with the cost of rimfire ammo and fuel. Some are leaning towards air rifle benchrest as the solution to the problem. Has anyone given any thought about maybe a centerfire cartrige based on a 40 grain 22 cal bullet with sub sonic velocities. Seems to me this would solve a lot of our problems and not involve using toy guns.

Apparently you've not had the opportunity to shoot a high quality air rifle. These things are not toys, but rather highly accurate rifles shooting at between 800 and 900 fps. You think its hard to read the wind with a rimfire; try shooting one of these with an 8 gm lead pellet.Though the inital investment is about the same as a custom rimfire; after that they're about two cents a shot and no hunting for the correct lot of ammo.
It may be that small 22 centerfires would eliminate the hunt for ammo; You would however, have to reload. To me the beauty of rimfire and air rifles is NOT having to fool with reloading and picking up brass.
Just my opinion. Fred

TRY IT YOU MAY LIKE IT!!!!!

Personally I would like to see RF BR adopt something similar to the centerfire couse of fire. Five bulls on each target. Shoot 5 targets at each yardage, 50yds and 100 yds. A match would have 50 record shots. You could limit the sighters to a total of 50. That way 2 boxes of ammo would do the whole match. I would only allow 5 mins for each target.

I have shot the IBS CF score targets at both 50 and 100. At 50 the CF target may be too easy. At 100 it is about right. A 100 yds a 50 point score is doable, a 5x is tough.
