What's the difference between a Heavy Palma barrel and a Heavy Varment barrel ? There both .900 at the muzzle. Thank you Max .
 
my guess the length of the breech non taper section..
you would have to look at the makers drawings

off kreigers drawings
palma std 2.5" cylinder and 5.5 lbs total finish at 30"
hvy var 5" cylinder and 7 lbs finish at 28"

A look on a barrel makers web site should tell you that Palma barrels have a more steeply tapered section between the untapered part and the rest of the barrel whereas a competition type heavy varmint contour tapers from the untapered part to the muzzle. Simple answer, the Palma barrels I have, Kriegers, are double tapered. They have a straight section just like a varmint barrel then they have a steeper taper for a ways then a shallower taper. Bottom line. you can get a longer barrel length of the same weight using the Palma.

I've only used the Palmas on 600 yard guns where the weight limit is 17 pounds.
