Questions on Scopes and Ballistics

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a Savage model 12 chambered in 300 WSM. i need a scope to go on it. Im on a budget so I was considering a Burris XTR 6.5-20X50mm. Whats your advice and opinion?

Next ? I want a scope with the mil dot reticle. How do i use the reticle. I know that one MOA is one inch at one hundred yards two inches and two hundred and so on. But how does MOA tie in to the mil dots. Also target knobs how do they work?

Some basic questions i know....i beg your patience to anyone who answers.
Thanks
Ryan

Ryan,

Let's take this one step at a time. Before choosing a scope, let's define the needs.

What will be the primary purpose of the rifle?
What will be the secondary purpose of the rifle?
Between what distances will you be shooting?
How is the terrain where you'll be shooting the rifle?

mil-dots

You will probably get more responses if you post this question in the factory/hybrid rifle forum. This one is for short-range benchrest and mil-dots are not used in this sport.

However, if you want to know how to use a Mil-Dot, check out the following link. I purchased their software stimulator and have fun with it. The freebie online is good enough.

The gun will primarily be used from the 500 to 1000 yard range. Ill be shootin targets and varmints mostly. But ill also be usin it for a long range deer gun and prolly a long range elk gun.

The terrain im in is western south dakota and wyoming so there will be alot of hills.

Thanks for the links to the sites. Ill be sure and check them out

Ok so i went to the sight that teaches the mil dot stuff. But im still confused they don't tell how to get the MIL DOT size of your target the formula was size of target in yards X 1000 divided by the MIL Size of target in MILs

If you know the range thats easy....but what if you don't know how far away your target is..... ?

Like i said im a little slow at this haha

You read the number mils based on the dots on your scope. Say you are looking a 6 ft (2 yds) person in the scope that appears 1.75 mils tall (1 full space between the dots + 3/4 of another).

Distance to target = (2 yds) * 1000 / 1.75 mil = around 1,142 yds

Go back and work the numbers they give you and then try the online simulation.

This is Crazy!!! it works....its kinda hard to estimate the height of the target exactly but i was usually pretty close. One more ? though. When finding the height you cant be zoomed in on the target? Cuz it wouldnt work that way it always showed twice as much. So i guess you could just divide by half?
