I have a cz 452 wanting to shoot in club matches .What would be a good scope to buy and what power .Leupold has a good 3-9=33 just wondering what would be good at 35 and 50 yard targets. thanks chris

I think you'll find a 3X-9X scope wanting in power for 50 yard matches and even 25 yard matches... My favorite for 25 and 50 yard shooting is the Sightron SII BigSky 6X-24X 42mm AO with fine crosshair/1/4 MOA dot reticule. This scope focuses as close as thirty feet for 10 meter and 50 ft range shooting as well.

For an inexpensive scope, the Simmons ProHunter Master Series 6X-24X 44mm works very well, the only drawback is it is only availible with a mildot reticule but has quickly become my #2 scope for target shooting. This scope focuses as close as 36 feetand 50 ft range is good with it but it doesn't quite focus for the range at 10 meters/33 ft...

Then there is the Weaver V series, I have the Weaver V-16 4X-16X with fine crosshair reticule however if I were to buy this scope again, I'd get the V-24 version as I find the 16X top magnification to be a bit lacking as compared to my two 6X-24X scopes...

I mention the 10 meter range even though a scope is not normally used this close however as I have an indoor 10 meter range in my cellar, my guns get tested while tuning them and I experiment with different ideas and things at 10 meters so being usable at 10 meters is a consideration for me...

Happy New Year and good shooting...

Scope choices

Since this is a Bench rest Forum, I am assuming that we are talking BR matches.

The problems we encounter when scoping RF guns is that the "normal" rifle scopes are made for center fire guns and usually have no parallax adjustment and are factory set at a range well beyond that at which we shoot. THis causes us to be unable to focus at close ranges and to have parallax problems at close ranges.

I would stay away from non-parallax adjusting scopes and be sure that what you get can adjust down to the ranges you are shooting.

I would look at a Weaver T-24 or T-36, my preference being the 36x scope.

Rules

Check the rules for the sanctioning body you are plannning to shoot with. In some cases, you may be limited to 6X magnification if you are shooting it as a "hunter" or "sporter" rifle.

Steve is right. Our local club has non-sanctioned 50 yard benchrest sporter matches that limit to 6x. We also have non-sanctioned 100 yard matches opened to rimfire and centerfire (different classes) where there is no limit on scope. So you need to check the rules. But try to get a scope with target turrets and adjustable objective. I have a nice older Burris 6x that works just great, don't know if they are still made or not. If no limit the Weaver 36x is a good choice.

The CZ and scope power . . .

If you decide to shoot in the Rimfire Central "On-Line" Matches: Your CZ-452 would compete in the "Factory Sporter Class". That class has a scope power limit of 24X.

Go here for the complete set of rules for the RFC Factory Sporter Class.

This thread is for the January RFC 25 yard Factory Sporter Class.

Here is the thread for the 50 yard January Factory Sporter Match. Same set of rules: Just twice the distance on the same USBR target.

We have about a dozen CZ 452 shooters in our local club. Most shoot the BSA 6-24X. Two of them have the Weaver T-24. I know of two that use the BSA 6-18X. We also have a dozen shooters with Unlimited class rifles. Some of them moved up to Unlimited after shooting in the Factory Sporter Class. We have a growing number of shooters in a new class called "Vintage Smallbore". No scope power limit in that class. We have tried to promote the RFC Semi-Auto Class, but can't seem to get the guys with the 10/22s to out to shoot in our matches.

Our club used the Rimfire Centeral rules and we submit all our local monthly match scores to RFC for the On-Line-Matches.

scopes

Thanks for all the reply's I thinking about the 24x weaver. chris

As I see it, the real winner scope here is the Sightron SIIB62442D - 6X-24X 42 mm AO with target turrets and 1/8 MOA clicks with fine crosshair 1/4MOA dot target reticule. Most matches that limit you to 6X will accept this scope set at 6X and if you wish to shoot in other classes, the scope can be set to 24X... Minimum focus is under 33 feet so it is useful at all ranges used for rifle matches. And it has a lifetime replacement warrantee...

Good shooting...

Could be a concern if close on weight. The big variable would weigh more than a 6x. My Savage 23AA with Burris 6x just makes 7 1/2. It will not make it with a variable. Other than that the variable makes sense, unless you are in an unlimited scope situation where less than 36 is a handicap at 50 yds. It is so hard when you get in to thsi competition thing to find one gun or scope that does it all. If your not pullin' a trailer you don't have enough stuff.:)

scopes

I'm looking at weaver 6x24 and a nikon 20x.Not sure which one. chris

If you are shooting BR targets you want a straight fixed power. If you have no power limit,= A Weaver T36 is the choice and you can buy an adapter to boost it to 45X that screws on the end. I have 5 = T36s that way I can leave them on the rifle and move the adapter to the one I am shooting, without re-adjusting each time. With the 36X you don't need a spoting scope, even at 100 yards.IMHO

I've used a Weaver 6-24 on my Anschutz 1416 D HB and have found it just great. As Mr. Haller notes, you can use it for other competitions that limit the level of magnification.
