Well I finally put my 12BVSS back together. I installed and headspaced my 26' Mcgowan barrel, successfully performed my first bedding job (thanks for the help), and headed for the range. I performed a ladder test and found my usual load to be the best starting load. This load is very hot so I won't post it. The powder is IMR 4350 and 95 grain ballistic silvertips. I assembled 2 loads, 1 at max. and 1 one grain below @ .025 from the lands. The lower powder charge provided the best groups, but both charges showed excessive horizontal. The vertical I could live with.Vertical was less than .5 inches, horizontal was 1" to 1.5". Wind conditions calm, using sandbags front and rear. I have some 85 TSX with same powder loaded to try next, but has been too hot to shoot since. Any powder recommendations?

Uh, McGowan barrel - aren't they factory equivalent barrels, like E. R. Shaw? If so, they aren't lapped and may take awhile to break in. I have used Shaw barrels in the past for quicky economy builds, and they usually require a bit of shoot and clean cycles for 100 rounds or more before everything smooths out. Once they settle down accuracy improves and can be quite good.

Axlenut,

There is a new owner and Quality Hand Lapped barrels are coming out now.
I shot a friends new SS pre-fit Savage 24" varmint contour in .223 that shot with ANY custom Hi-End barrel makers tubes. Cleanup basically with solvent and a few patches...

Try these two

I have had the best results with that bullet in my .243 with 42grs of H4350, and 45grs of IMR7828. Both of those are with CCI200 primers, and get almost 3000fps. The load with 7828 is a full case and doesnt lose but maybe 50fps in cold temps. Both will shoot less than 1/2 inch, with the edge going to 7828 again. My loads are .030 off the lands. I tried IMR4350 and didnt get nearly as good of results, but that may have just been the preference of my rifle.

Good news, thanks for the info. I just ordered a Shilen Select Match Grade Savage barrel - delivery takes 16 weeks. The last Schneider barrel I ordered took 8 weeks. At my age I would like delivery before I croak! Apparently all the custom barrel makers are busy.

Thanks, I'll try them both.
