What kind of Benchrest stock for 700?

Since my Rem 700LTR is basically used as a benchrest rifle I have tossed around the idea of replacing the HS Precision stock with a wide forend BR style stock that is actually designed for shooting off the bags.

I thought a laminated stock would be the way to go since the extra weight will actually be welcome with the short barrel LTR and the price would be the most affordable.

Has anyone here used a benchrest style stock on their 700 or can recommend the best place to order one?

Shehane (D&B Supply) offers a hybrid BR/Varmint Rutland laminated stock with a three inch abbreviated forend that is round at the balance point for comfort in carrying. A regular BR stock is a pain to carry any farther than from the truck to the bench. I think Richards has similar offerings as well. They both have websites so you can take a look.

Even if I switch the stock out I'll still keep the HS stock for the LTR since I eventually plan on having some kind of custom built and at that time will drop the LTR back in to the HS stock.
 
If you want a benchrest stock, go to Bruno's shooter supply, and get a McMillan Edge or Kelbly Klub or another real benchrest stock.

You will need to have it bedded in properly by a gunsmith, recoil pad of your choice fitted. You will not need your magazine, floorplate etc. You will need a trigger guard and follower for single shot.

This will cost you $750 or so depending on gunsmith.
 
HS Precision Has One $260

I just took delivery of a HS Precision Pro BR stock from Midway USA for $260. Mine fits the ADL 700 short action. It's a true BR stock with the 3" wide forearm and straight stock. It has the aluminum bedding block as well. Midway is having a sale on several HSP stocks for Remmys.

The mag well is filled with some kind of material so I think some inletting will be needed. Also, the stock came with 3 ADL stock screws. I also suppose that I will need a single shot follower.
 
I have two Don Stith 'Darts', one on my 40x rimfire and the other is for my 40X centerfire project. You still have to drill the holes for the pillars, glass bed the action, apply some finish [ well, eventually ] and make a buttplate. I am pretty happy with the handling of the stock.

Looking at The HSP Stock

I got the stock home and took the magazine off the barrelled action and it was not a true drop in, but close. They made no provision for the smaller middle (trigger guard) screw. They sent 3 ADL screws with the stock. A little work with the Dremel tool will fix that. I like the bedding block in the stock. The black pebble like finish just begs to be painted, and I will do that some day.

The material in the mag well is to make it a single shot, so duh! on me. :rolleyes:

For $260 I am satisfied.
