What is the minimum rifle/scope combo for entry to our game.

For the new shooters looking on the site, I think the above is the first question. With a possibility of some future class STARTER, BASIC, SPORTER, what ever it might be called, it will attract some rimfire shooters and some airgun plinker/hunters.

That is for the future. How about posting what you think a new shooter could start with and enjoy todays game before he is hooked for the big bucks.

Out of the box min. rifle and scope. Not to win of course but to make a decent showing and have some fun.

I have a 249.00 Hammerli Pnuema which is a Hatsan from Turkey. Far from a HV winner but fun to shoot. I have groups at the top of the un-regulated power curve that are as good as my NJR bragging groups. They ship at about 22 ft lbs. and I have mine around 19.5. Carbon Fiber Stock. Trigger is heavy pull but breaks nice. With a Simmons 20 power, my friend has a high target of 244 and a 3 target around 726. Takes a lot to clean the barrel and many pellets to settle in.

What say you.

Great topic Bob. My suggestion is a little more expensive than your Pnuema, but probably more competitive. I've shot a couple of 250's outdoors with my CZ200S in the custom stock I built for it and a few other tweaks, but it was very capable of shooting consistently in the high 230's to mid 240's in the factory stock with a 3" block screwed to the front end. I bought mine on sale from CZUSA for $385 complete with a nice little compact 4X scope with adj. objective. Sell the 4X and put the money towards a cheap 6-24X(I have a Tasco Target/Varmint AO that I paid $99 new for, if anyone would like it for $50 they can have it) and you're in the LV class for around $450. They can be turned up to around 15.5 ft lbs but I never checked the shot count at that setting to see if I could shoot a full target. All in all, a great little gun with an impressive barrel for the price!

I would like more answers to this post along with photos' if possible. How did some of you get friend's, and other shooters' to realize the air rifle is capable of some real accuracy?

I am the wrong person to contribute to this thread but it could be a great thread for new shooters or shooters new to air rifle benchrest.

A USA Production class has been discussed. Some highlights could be that the rifle, rings and scope would have a price ceiling, maybe $600.00 or so. The rifle must be mass produced, readily available and completely unmodified. .177, .20 and .22 calibers are allowed. No mechanical front rest. The front bag, likewise, must be mass produced, readily available and completely unmodified. Just some thoughts.

What lead me to believe that air rifles had enough accuracy to be interesting? Putting up an international target with a 2mm OD 10 ring at 25 meters and looking at the target through a scope. Once I did that and found some posted scores, I was in awe.

When I saw how tiny the pellets were, recognized they were only 3 cents each and they had nothing but air propelling them, I knew this was the new frontier.

Check out www.airgunsofarizona.com or www.pyramidair.com and you will see most anything that will fit your budget. Bear in mind that the 20 ft lb. class has more competitors and are the most common. I think that the over 20ftlb class will grow in .22 cal. because that is what the rim fire guys shoot. A good start would be to shop around and then wait for the out of the box class that chris is planning.

Arizona site has videos. group shooting results. velocity reports. noise levels and most everything you want to know. The pyramid site has video and reviews. Once you connect with some of these on you tube you can gather lots of info pictures and results. Some folks think 200.00 is an insane amount of money to pay for an air rifle. The key question is are they competitors and would they pay 1800.00 plus up front to totally recover their cost very quickly if they love to shoot and run 200 to 300 pellets each time at the range. I have been thinking of how to bring em in and I considered that the work plinking from the bench might work. I am a member of a 2000 member club. NRA club of the year.
There is one rifle silhouette match and on NRA match rifle prone. When I go to the range sometimes the 22 range and the other where center fire and rimfire go to longer distance. 100 % of the shooters are plinking from the bench. I plan to go to the .22 range with my air rifles and set them up, then go down the line and ask every other shooter to come try extreme accuracy at the lowest possible cost.

The sad thing to know is how few competitors there are. WE ARE A RARE BREED.
