What Happened to Glenn Newick?

Hunter

Chasin' the Sunset
I haven't seen his name in the benchrest world (other than in reference to his book, and that he has six HOF points) in quite some time. Does he still shoots competitively? If not, does anyone know why?

He is still suffering from his bout with Canadian beer, him and Jeff Stover thought they could drink it like U.S. beer.:cool:

Bill,

Many moons ago, when my ship (USS Essix) was doing drill with the HMS Bonadventure, The Kanuck sailors called U.S. beer " pony pi$$ " imagine that!

Glenn, is still around, and is back in the US. He's been working on a new book that involved testing various rifles in different cartridges. Not exactly sure what kind of book it's going to be. He's on Facebook and had some about his testing for his book posted on there.

Hell, in my earlier years I played baseball, as a kid, on the deck of the HMCS Magnificent, the forerunner of the HMCS Bonadventure, and I remember at that time the Kanuck sailors were very "OBSERVANT"

That your about my age. I sure enjoyed Halifax. The ladies liked sailors

They liked anyone with $5.00 in their pocket. I lived in Dartmouth and we would sometimes would take the North Ferry across the harbour. It was the second ferry at that time. It went from Dartmouth to HMCS Strathcona. Anyway to get back to the thread, Glenn and Jeff stayed at my place when Glenn was getting material for his book. He does have a Facebook account because I am listed as one of his friends, don't know why he has never forgiven me for that weekend. :) :)

The Times They Are A Changing

I talked to Glen several years ago. It was my impression that his interests now lie more with hunting guns and larger calibers. I believe that his book will be on this subject rather then benchrest. This information is several years old and may have changed especially since that pesky drone missile attack on his vehicle last year. The last I heard he was living at the bottom of an abandoned oil well near Midland, TX. Tim

The last time I saw him was at Raton in 2005. I have it on good authority that he is now down on the Mexican border painting Elvis pictures on black velvet. James

Working on Book

I called Glenn a few months ago when I was trying to complete an article on Henry Christman for the now defunct "Precision Shooting" magazine. We had a nice talk and he confirmed that he is working on a book about hunting rifles. I talked to John Jones a little while later, and he said that Glenn had been at Tomball recently, but he missed him because he (John) was in a hurry and didn't know Glenn was there and didn't get out of the truck. I need to finish up that article and see if "Precision Rifleman" wants to publish it. Henry was a pretty interesting character. John Jones, Ralph Council, Frank Wilson, Sam Duke and others gave me a lot of good information and were a pleasure to talk to. I'll have to take in some shoots in Texas some day. Might even want to move there to get some heat into my aching bones.

Hi Kids, still alive, and because of Gammon's cooking and beer

I'm older and heavier than I used to be.

For those who don't know, I'm trying to teach myself to shoot right handed. The type of arthritis I have has several parts to it, and one meant that my left eye went to 20/350 a couple years back. After several surgeries it is back to 20/150 in a darkened room.

All is well though because I have a good attitude and am working on a new book. (At my normal pace - which means it is going into five years) So far I have built, borrowed, or purchased about 40 hunting rifles in cartridges from 17 Rem to 375 H&H. The first book will include 222, 223, 22PPC, 22-250, 220 Swift, 243, 240 Wby, 6PPC, 257 AI, 270, 270 Wby, 7-08, 7Rem Mag, 308, 30-06, 30-338, 300 Win, 338 Win Mag and 35 Whelen. Each was built as a hunting rifle, though many of them are built as Sendero style rifles. Each of these 19 has its own chapter where I discuss the build, testing and hunting experiences. (For example, I can tell you that a 100 lb doe doesn't like a 338 Win Mag much)

Even shooting right handed 18 of the 19 have groups of .3 or smaller with the best being the 22PPC in the .040" range (all three shots since they are hunting rifles). The only which is worse is the clapped-out 270 Wby, which was used as a varmint rifle before I got it. (it included 200 empty cases that had been fired a lot)

Anyone who wants, look me up on FaceBook. I try to report at least weekly on what chapter I'm working on, and the "groups" photo section has a lot of photos and comments that will be in the new book.

I'm hoping to finish it up this year, I'm working on final edit now.

Cheers,

Glenn

Glenn, I'm glad to know that you're older than you used to be. :D I enjoyed your book, and still read bits and pieces of it frequently. I didn't realize you shot from the wrong side before.

PS I'm not on Facebook because they ask for my birthdate, and I don't intend to give it to them because they don't need it. :p

Correction. It was not 2005 but it was when the Nationals were held at Raton...2007? Also, it may have been John Gammuto who was doing the Elvis;) paintings. Good to hear from you Glenn. James

A fonder memory..

We were at Fairchance for the Nats and they had a go-cart track almost, if not, right next to the range. Glenn and some others bought in for a long time and completely ignored the track rules. They were crashing into each other right and left and the track guy was frantic. Rightfully so because there were kids there as well. One of the most serious offenders had a problem with his go-cart and came into the 'pit'. The track guy was a bit relieved that one of them was off the track and turned his back to tinker with the go-cart. While the guy wasn't looking, whoever it was, cranked up the fellows personal cart and took off. I'll never forget the powerless look on that guys face as he calmly muttered..."Ah $hit, I just painted that thing". I couldn't stand to watch anymore and went to that two story Italian joint for spaghetti. Felt guilty about leaving as my CPR and advanced first aid training was current at the time.
