What "factory action" for rimfire build?

The aftermarket rimfire receivers and actions are a little out of my budget at this time. I can't get the thought out of my head of trying to build my first bench rimfire. The last couple years i burn up a few bricks of Wolf.. put things down for a few months but keep coming back.

I have a wore out south bend lathe -but can cobble with it. With the aftermarket parts out of my reach -what factory action would be good to start out with for a re barrel on a rimfire bench project. I know it won't be a world beater -but i could learn a lot from a budget project.

On RimFire Central the CZ's seem to shoot quite well. You can buy it new for about $400. Maybe something like this and use it for a platform to start with.

I know benchrest use threaded bbls, is there an decent action that is press or pin fit. I'm not good enough to cut threads with my lathe. My first project won't be perfect, but maybe if i get to do a second and 3rd project - i can improve.

I'm just looking for someplace to start, thanks joe

Are you looking to be competitive, or just want a project to play with? What's your budget?

I'd venture to say getting an older anshutz my be the best bang for your buck. Let's say you take a $400 factory rifle, but then add the cost of match grade barrel, reamer, headspace gauges, now you're around $800. You still don't have a decent trigger, and there may be none avaiable. I'd venture to say you could find an Anshutz in the $800 range that'll be at least as good, likely much better, than the cheaper gun with a match barrel.

It just depends on what you are after.

Learn how to cut metric threads to work on the CZ! May not be possible on your lathe unless you have the proper gear setup. Then it may be a different technique to learn. I can cut them but it's a PIA on my lathe. A cheaper alternative to learn on would be a Remington 541, 540, 581 etc. as they don't require threading. Trigger re-work can bring them down to 5-10 ounces pull.
Not the best BR setup but a way to learn.

Action,You say ?

Get a Rem 40X.You can get more custom items for this action than you can count. Plus the new Kelbly trigger is going to be the trigger the world awaited.
In looking at 40X wins, what hasn't it won?
And it is all USA Made?:)

CZ Thread Pitch

I too thought that the thread pitch on a CZ translated into something like 12.5 tpi. Anyone know what it actually is?

Thanks guys for all the replys. This project is gonna kill what few brain cells i have left, lol. joe

Go with the CZ and learn how to cut threads. Butch Lambert is coming out with a 2oz trigger for them.

I bought one of the new CZ 453 Varmints and it has an adjustable set trigger. It's not far from 2oz. I've only put a few rounds of different match ammo through it. I've added a tuner but am unsure how well it will do with the 20.9" HB. Even comes with dovetail.
Have any of the BR gunsmiths fit one of these new CZ's with a match barrel?

You have a fine gunsmith that you shoot with at the Pensacola Range. Ask him if he would or could fit a barrel for you. You would be saving time and money in the long run.:p

Steve,
You are right, Rich is excellent (and really nice/helpful guy). Last month I bought a great Rem 513T from him. It may well be better than my Annie 64. Gosh, I guess like all these fine .22lr target/match rifles.

It would be interesting to know the results of anyone putting a Shilen or Lilja barrel on one of the new CZ 453 actions.

I would buy a CZ452 and not 453. I think if you put a gage to it about 12oz. is as light as the trigger will go. It will not accept the aftermarket triggers also.
