i'm going to build a long range gun for bench AND prone. starting with rem 700 la...left hand( cause i shoot rifle leftie).
while my initial intention was to do 300 win mag, i thought i would ask here.
i looked in the match results section, but only went to 550 yds.
so whats popular ? in popular expand to bbl length, bullet weight, twist.
stocks and scopes ?
custom reamers for the bullet used ?
i know the gun will be a compromise, being both prone and bench, but willing to do it.
thanks

someone want to send me an equiptment list from matches / nationals ?

Mike
That will depend a little on whether your primary interest is in 600 or 1000 yard competition. Looking through equipment lists it seems that 600yd is favored by smaller caliber(6mm, 6.5mm) where as 1000yd seems to run the gamut. I built a 7mm saum to shoot both 600 and 1000 but it is more gun than needed for 600. In fact I think the next 600yd match I’ll try my slow twist 6mmBR.
If you have a standard bolt face I would look hard at the 280 Ackley.

Results and equipment lists for IBS 600 and 1000 here.

One thing to consider is that brakes aren't allowed in F-Class or IBS Heavy gun.

Mike,

You living so close to NBRSA 1000BR sanctioned events north of Byers, CO at the CRC range, I suggest you take in one of those matches and see what the boys are using their!!!

There is a match scheduled their next weekend (the 18th of May) and then the June match is their "State Match" on the 28th & 29th.

Depending where you located in Aurora, but you should be around 50-miles from the CRC range.

Happy Shooting

yes i posted here(1000 yds) for a reason...long range and further,,lol
thanks for the link.
yep byers is close enough...except off to take my grandsons to disneyland for thier birthdays this week....so will miss the weekend match.
may be able to make the next one tho..on sat, i run a match on sunday.

and i dont do brakes.....the only safe place with those is directly behind the gun, everyone else suffers....

am i ok with 300 win mag ?? i see lots of 6.5's but wins seem to be both 300's and 6.5's ????

Mike,

I believe a couple of the club records at the CRC range are still held by a 300WM. Bill Schrader being the trigger man behind them...

A 300 is good choice in my opinion, and they are a proven winner to the sport. I myself am on the little 6's.

Happy Shooting

Rifle for both BR and Prone

This would be my choice: A 284 using 175 or 180 grain bullets, I've won prone, F-class and BR matches with the 284. Two stocks are used. Notice the front sight band for iron sights.

jerry,
thats a straight 284,,,,did you use a long reamer set for the heavy bullets ?
while i'm leaning to 300 wm, i am open minded.
how long is your bbl, and how much do they weigh ? the rifles that is. what scope do you use ??
thanks
mike

284

Mike,
The rifle in prone with irons is under 14#, prone scope Leo 8-20X is about 14#s both are using a wood stock. In BR and F-class using a McMillian low profile stock the weight is under 17# with a NF 12-42X BR scope, so the rifle can be used as a light gun in BR matches. The 284 will perform with the 6.5/284 (maybe better) and have twice the barrel life. Will attach a reamer print.

Barrel length is 30" and is a med. palma taper.
