Hello Gentlemen
I currently have a Ruger M77 30-06 I'm looking at rebarreling the rifle with a new caliber without changing the bolt, well maybe opening it a bit if needed.I was also considering having the action blueprinted and maybe even bolt sleeving if needed. I would like to be able to use the rifle for Varmint and Long Range Comp. either HP. or F-Class. Does anyone have any recommendations from actual experience as to a caliber for such uses built on this action.:D

Thanks for the info. f21sh

The Ruger 77 isn't a really popular action for competitive shooting of any kind for several reasons. They're satisfactory hunting actions, and some can be accurate enough for high power shooting - maybe, but 99+% of competitive shooters use something else which probably says something about the matter.

Enjoy your Ruger but find something else to build on. If you really want to rebarrel it the bolt face you have is same as 6 BR, ,243 Win, 308 win , 22-250
and many others. But don't go into reworking the action.

lapping the lugs and trueing up the action face is about all that you need to do on a 77 action. 6.5-08 works for F-class, as does 6.5-06. Not too many folks are shooting magnums in F-Class so no need to open the bolt anymore than its present 06 size head. Ruger actions can be accurate, they just don't have the mystic of the Rem 700 or pre-64 Win.
