What caliber to build of 700 action in 300wm?

My barrel is toast in my 300 win mag sendero. I need to rebarrel and I was thinking on going to 22" barrel. It is my F-class rifle, but I also use it in tactical matches as I cant afford 2 setups, and I am really comforable with this gun. I like my stock, scope, and basic kit. I'm set up for 300 win mag, bullets, brass, powder and all that, but I have to buy new dies(one of the reasons I've been gone so long, alot of my stuff got swiped....), so this is a chance to change calibers. Stay 300 wm or go with something new?

The fact that you have a long action with magnum bolt face pretty well limits you to what you can use. You could go to a WSM or SAUM, but they may not feed well from a long action magazine. I have had them feed well from a long action magazine by filling the back of the magazine with a .223 block, shortening the follower and using a .308 magazine spring. If you're shooting single shot, then magazine function isn't a problem. The few guys that I've been barreling for F-class have used 6.5-284, .284 and 7 SAUM on the last one I barreled for them. Barrel life was an issue with the 6.5-284. The .284 worked well, but they went to the 7 SAUM to gain more velocity than what the .284 would get. I haven't heard back from them on the SAUM. What I'd suggest, is if you've been doing well shooting the .300 Win Mag in F-class, then stick with it. If you have been finishing middle of the pack, then I'd look at what the ones who have been winning have been using. It all just depends upon what your goals are in what event you are competing. For a .300 Win Mag, I probably wouldn't go with a 22" barrel as you'd be having too much powder falling out the end of your barrel unburned and be loosing velocity. You can check for unburned powder by putting a white sheet on the ground, shoot your rifle off a bench and see how much unburned powder is on the sheet after you shoot. I'd suggest at least 26" with a .300 Win Mag. Cut it at 22" and you'll lose velocity. How much, I don't know but it's normally 25 to 50 fps per inch cut off depending upon caliber. I don't shoot F-class, but I have built rifles for guys shooting F-class. Also, as to the 22" barrel length, it may work better for your tactical matches than a 26" barrel. It just depends upon how the matches are set up and what kind of competition it is. That's the bad thing about using the same rifle in two different types of competition. It usually winds up being a compromise rifle for one or the other event.

Mike knows of what he speaks, I have always found his advice to be sound.

You might be better off building a switch-barrel rifle. With one barrel for F-class, and another for tactical, you could have the best of both worlds in the same rifle. You could even invest in a second bolt so you can run a standard bolt face for one and magnum for the other. It is all up to what you want and the budget that you have to spend.

I agree with MB

I agree with MB when a 26 inch tube was suggested for this cartridge. The laws of physics are what they are. You might as well save the powder and only put in what can burn in the first 22 inches if you run that length tube. The excess muzzle gas can also cant a projectile as the gas cloud passes it.

Been busy. went to cali for 4 months for work, then came back got laid off. The rifle is currently a back seat thing. I have desided on getting a 308 for tac matches and I think that will open up my options on the F-class rig. The 284 seems like a very nice round that would have pretty good barrel life. I did get to shoot a very nice rifle in california that had a McHale stock. That thing is awecome! I figure I'll save up the money and build a nice 284 on a McHale stock and have it all blueprinted at the same time. all I got to do now is save up the money when I get back to work.
