What about a rem 541X??

I found an unissued 541X. Of course they are ugly and all but do they shoot worth a hoot? I am thinking about an unofficial bench rifle for a very small club shoot we attend once a month. Me and my pard were thinking that it would be fun to get a couple savages or CZ's and try to beat the guys with them. This will be for fun only!! Of course the rifle we choose will need to shoot at least a little for us to accomplish our goals. I have done a bit of research on the 541X and i understand the triggers are kinda junk. I didnt however read much on there accuracy potential. Will a 541X shoot??? Thanks Lee

I have a 541X that Brian Voelker built for me in 2004. It shoots very well now, but I wasn't real happy with it's accuracy when I first got it. Brian did a great job on it (even the trigger is nice) and it's now a compeditive Sporter.

skeetlee,

I also have a 541X that didn't seem to shoot very well either. Even after modifying it to make and inexpensive BR-50 style shooter. My reworked 513T outshot it without question. It's sat in the case for several years, along with all my other guns because I stopped shooting due to our range closing and the expense of raising kids, etc.
Anyway, this year I decided to start shooting again and have also sent my rifle to Brian Voelker. I've been shooting the 541 this summer and up until recently I was kind of on the fence regarding how much the accuracy had improved after Mr. Voelker did the work. I'd shot some old Tenex, Match Xtra, the old Fed Ultra Match, RWS makes, and some of the new brands made by Lapua and it's shot ok. I've been steadily improving my scores on the USBR target the last couple of months and had shot as high as 229 3X at 50yds. However, Tuesday I shot a 236 (Lapua Midas +) a 238 3X (Eley Match) and a 247 7x (Eley Match). The 247 might be a bit of a gift but I'll take it.
So, considering that it's never going to be a 40X, I think these rifles can be made to shoot pretty decent if your willing spend the additional money and time to tweak it and feed it properly. Otherwise they're just average bolt action .22's

Thats just it. I didnt want to have to spend a few extra hundred bucks to get one to shoot. I ended up with a 40x anyway. I have always wanted one so i bit!! Thanks lee

Good for you on the 40X! I think you've made a good choice. If I had the means I'd have one as well. It's a great base to start with and you can customize it as time and the wallet permits. I've dreamed for many years of having an actual benchrest rifle but I have a family that I need to take care of first.

Happy shooting!
