What .30 Cartridge?

Hello, all,

First post here.

I've done some handloading for my Win 70A rifle in 270 Win and have gotten some good results.

I would like to build a sandbag rifle capable of crows at 750 and deer at 1000. (I killed my second deer this year at an honest 288 yds paced, off a rest of course.) I'm thinking a M98 or M70 action with a heavy barrel, maybe fluted, and I'm thinking it should probably be a 30 caliber. My question is, what 30 cal cartridge? I'm thinking of 30-06 but with plus-SAAMI pressures like maybe 65000 CUP. I've read that 300 Win Mag has a short neck...308 needs more capacity...just seems lieke 30-06 would be a good chamber to start with. Comments?

Or should I go DOWN-caliber? I'm all for sectional density and arrowlike bullets...maybe what I need is those Swede 6.5mm arrows

Anyway, this is a nice forum, and I look forward to lurking some more and benefiting for your knowledge,,,

Jeff,

I'm guessing that people are a little gun shy on this topic. Go to the top of the page, click on the "search" tab, and type in "what cal" and you will see what I mean. Personally, another round of 200+ post's on this topic wouldn't bother me in the least. But, then again, I am a nut job with little or no ethics.:D:D

If you don't want to read all 200+ posts.......just read mine.;) Or send me a PM.

Thanks,

Every decision you make will be a compromise. As I take this walk with customers I ask a couple of questions. What bullet do you want to shoot? How fast? Then look at cartridge cases. Then I work shooters ability and ethics into the conversation. By the time we get to the end they have a pretty good idea of 1. what equipment it takes to shoot long range. 2. What caliber they can use to perform at a high level of accuracy. Most of the time less is better. 3.costs

?????

I tried to follow my own advice with the search engine and got no where!!! I typed in...what cal.... And got lots of stuff, but that post didn't show up (at least not on the first 3 pages)

TRY THIS...... Click on my name on this post.....look for all posts by this user.....and look for the "what cal" posts.

That should work.

To you guys that have been here for a while, and more importantly, know how to use a search engine.....why didn't it work?
