weaver vintage external adjustment mounts

Hello, I have a weaver v8 and weaver external adjustment mounts. How do you keep the spring depressed on the rear mount so you can slide it on the scope without scratching the finish?
These are vintage items of course not usually seen today.

On the units I have, Unertl, B&L there is a polished metal cap over the spring. Does not prevent wear of finish but no gouging or scratching from a raw spring end so perhaps something is missing.
