I am thinking of converting my AR10 .308 to a 6.5x47 and am wondering several things. Like is it doable in the first place? What complications if any would I encounter? What is a good twist rate? I would be using it for varmint and maybe competition. I haven't had much experience with the ar type rifle so any input would be appreciated. Thanks

6.5x47 is a killer cartridge but lots more expensive to run than a 308. Itll work just fine. Id go with like a 243 or 260 if i was throwing them thru an autoloader but thats just me. Lots more actual data out there to get the gas system right on those over the lapua. Just thinking of the cost of brass that thing will chew up- wow

I bought a DPMS LR 260 a few months ago and really like it. None of my loads from my 260 bolt guns even come close, they over pressure the gas gun right now. Before you make a choice go to JP rifles and read what John Paul has to say about the 6.5 Lapua versus the 260 Remington. He compares loads in a PDf about reloading for all ARs, it was an eye opener for me.

If you use the Lapua case, switch over to an Armalite bolt and carrier, or another brand that has a smaller firing pin hole than the standard DPMS. You can have fp blanking issues with the small rifle primer and the standard fp hole. I'd go with the Creedmoore though as brass isn't so spendy and it would still be a good fit for the mag length. Also be aware some of the very pointy match bullets (VLD's) can have feeding issues. The small needle points get jammed between the lugs of the barrel extension.

My friend in Tenn. had 3 DPMS LR's all in 243 win. One of his pierced a lot of primers. He shortened the firing pin a little on a stone and, the problem went away. I noticed on mine ,the 260 that it was scratching up the bore guide some thing awful. The forward assist was touching just a little, a little touch with the dermel and it clears now.
