VLP on the way-advice sought

Greetings all,

I've been a member/reader here for a few years, but I think this is my first thread.

After much reading and research, I decided to go with a Savage 12 VLP in .223.( I actually prefer the BVSS stock, but a NIB VLP showed up for just over $600 and I decided to jump, I can eventually replace the stock.)

Anyhow, now its time to figure out base/ring and scope selections.

I will be shooting mostly 100-200yds, prone and off a bench, so I don't really need ultra-high magnification (over 30X), but I would like good optical quality. I'm a paper-puncher, and don't need to consider hunting situations.

Ideally, I'd like to stay under $600. Probably a variable power scope for different shooting situations. I like the simplicity of a fixed, but the variable provides more options.

I am basically ignorant on bases/rings and can use all the information, or pointers to information, I can get.

Recommendations based on your hands-on experience are sincerely appreciated.

Regards,

Glenn

Glenn,
Talley rings and base's, and a good value scope would be a Weaver 6 x 24 x 44 classic with mil-dot, scopes are like golf clubs, deer rifle calibers and boobs,,,,,,,,,,,what ever you have at home is what most people think is the best thing going,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

the wind is my friend,,,,,,,,,,,,

I like Savages and have several of them. But one of the issues with them is that for some reason either the barrels/actions are crooked or the scope base holes are drilled off center. All of mine have benefited from Burris Signature rings. I like Warne weaver style bases coupled with Burris Signature Zee rings.

The scope, as David D said is subjective. If you don't want a 36x, there are several that I like. The Weaver Grand Slam is good as is the Sightron and the Bushnell 4200 is good if you can find a used one. But, if you are going to shoot paper it's hard to beat a Weaver 36x for quality and value.

Rick, If I was going for a fixed-power, the Weaver would be my first choice. I'll look at the Talley and Burris rings.

Thanks.

Cant beat leupold, fixed is good for target shooting, variable much better for varmit hunting. I have a 6.5x20 efr, target dot, target turrets on a vlp in 22-250. I have a 24x fixed on a 40x for paper shooting. The 24 fixed isnt good for varmits because of the limited field of view.

Second on the Burris Signature Zee rings and either Weaver or Warne bases. the Weavers are aluminum, the Warnes are steel.

The good thing about the Burris rings is that the synthetic inserts will not mar your scope, and if needed you can by offset inserts to correct for less than centered scope base mount holes.

PM coming at you concerning scopes.

Savage VLP 223

This rifle has to be one of the best of the box varmint rifles...some may say Savage rifles are ugly....thats the guys that don't have one or shot one in the field...Savage has come a long way....Big Green and the others are still trying to keep up....
