Visalia weather research + DA

After reading Dan's match report, and with all the recent talk about tuners and density altitude I took the liberty of researching the conditions and using an on line DA calculator to arrive at the DAs for two times during the day. The information was gleaned from this page.
http://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/KVIS/2008/2/17/DailyHistory.html

Using the above-mentioned method, (alt. 295') the DA for 8:15 was -1,163' (yes, a negative number, indicating below sea level), and 516' at 2:35, for a total difference of 1,679'. It would be interesting to hear from some of the participants as to how much load (or tuner) adjustment was needed to stay in tune throughout the day.

Congratulations to all. Dan, how did you feel after the fourth shot on that small group?

Hi Boyd,

I got a -854 DA at 8am and 264 DA at 4pm for a spread of about 1,000 DA, for the day of 2/8/08 which is the day that I believe was listed on Dan's original shooting report.

With this small to medium spread in DA throughout the day, plus very light wind conditions, I figured these were good contributions to the great scores that were shot that day. I used the wahiduddin.net calculator that I believe you provided in one of the other threads.................Don

Boyd,
I just ran outside to take a reading on my DA guage. It seems after using it 3 times 2 weeks ago my barrery is dead. The batteries will put me in the poorhouse. The 3 readings that I got were just switch it on and then off. Probably used it 30 seconds total.

Butch my Kestrel 4000 goes forever...

on Duracell batteries. What DA battery eating gauge are you using?

Jim

PS-Are you and Jay Lynn gonna make the Cactus?

Same with mine Jim.

I use some fancier ones "for high drain devices" at a bit more money but after having been on for probably several hours worth of use the battery indicator has only dropped a little to 90%.

The 4000 is a very cool little bit of gear.

Have you ever messed with calibrating the Baro and/or Altitude ?? It says you don't need to for the DA reading since it uses station pressure. I set the reference of the pressure in the alt screen to get the elevation right at a known area and the next day the elevation was twice what it should be. I re-read the instructions, set the elevation in the baro screen and then tranferred the pressure reading to the reference in the alt screen and the next day the height was half what it should be. Kinda lost on that, any idea ???

Hello Jim,
I put Duracell in it. Mine is the K&K racecar unit. Something has to be running in the background for the batteries to run down that quick. I'm going to check with the vendor for help.
Jay Lynn and I are too broke, I am that is, Jay Lynn still has all the money he has made and then some.
I have the extra expense of a Grandson shooting this year. I wouldn't trade for it as he really likes it and I think he has a talent for it. Will we see you in Raton?

Hi Don,
The 08 denotes to the year. The match was this past weekend. Just to make sure, I checked the schedule.

Hello Butch...

Yes I'm looking forward to seeing you and Jay Lynn at Raton. I'm hoping to make all four shoots there this year. Can't beat being in the Rockies in the summer, gets me out of the long hot summer syndrome.

BJS6--I haven't experienced the symptoms you describe with my Kestrel. I do adjust my barometer every morning of a meet if necessary, as you describe. Also adjust the altimeter if necessary...they do fluctuate because of the little changes in barometeric pressure. Are you pushing the adjust button that you pushed to be able to make your changes again after you have reset? You have to lock your changes in.

I did have a program problem with my Kestrel when I first got it several years ago. Sent it back to Kestrel and they did a reprogram and had it back to me in less than a week. You may want to email them; the woman technican that I spoke with was very good and diagnosed my problem over the phone.

Jim,

I adjusted like I THOUGHT the instructions said and then later like the instructions did actually say. I also hit that button again to lock in the settings. I could go back to it the following day and the reference setting was still there but the altitude had changed while I was sitting in the same place as previous.

It was like the unit would sense a change in pressure and assume that meant it was at a different altitude. I am sure I am doing something incorrect somewhere.

Good thing is they say those refernces don't matter for DA because the DA calculation is done using the station pressure and not altitude or barometric pressure at sea level. I checked the DA while altering the references for BARO and ALTITUDE and it doesn't seem to alter the DA at all, just like they said.

Boyd, thanks for the correction, I should have noticed this earlier, in that 2-08-08, fell on a Friday, normally not a tournament day at Visalia............Don
