Using a Throating Reamer

What's the best way to cut the throat for the intended bullet, using a throating reamer.
Make up a dummy round and slide it into the chamber , than measure how much deeper the throat needs to be cut. Plus .010-.020 saftey factor for a hunting rifle.

Thanks for any help

Here are some tips:

Make a bushing/stop with set screw to control depth of cut. Throating reamers remove rifling like a hot knife in soft butter.
Don't just trust your hand wheel. you can be reaming and not know it. Very little felt resistence.

Make sure the case you are using as a gauge is properly sized ie: in the neck and web area. If your case is not free fitting you may ream beyond your desired depth.

A sure way to do it right and exact is to get the Lambeth gage at Pacific Tool & Gage.

You must be properly fixtured or you can easily mess up a barrel because the throater can remove metal before you realize it.

I'll use a factory round to take measurements.

I used one of your Micro adjustable reamer stops to chamber with. They sure work great and make life easier.

is this for the 257 weatherby ?
and are you planning on using factory ammo or working up your own ?
me thinks with a short non weatherby throat and factory ammo you might have a pressure issue.

This is for a .257 Wthby . I wanted to throat it so Any factory ammo can be shot safely.

ok...
anyone can correct me, but weatherby's have long throats/freebore.....
if you throat to clear by .010/.020 you MAY run into pressure issues.

"+2 on the Lambeth/Kiff Micrometer Stop."
Are you fellas talking about the stop that attaches to the reamer that PT&G sells for around 150 bucks? If so does this stop attach to the reamer or does it attach to the reamer pusher? This looks like a great idea but i am not sure it will work on my pusher? PT&G changed up the web site a bit and i am a little disappointed with product description. Lee

The Micro Reamer Stop body attaches to the reamer shank with a set screw.
There are two collars that screw onto the body, one has indexing marks.
The second collar has two jobs. one is a jam nut for the indexing collar, its second job is to bump up against the back of the barrel tenon to act as a debth stop for the reamer.

The Viper on YouTube has a video showing the Micro Reamer Stop in action.
