Upgrading a Caldwell Rock Front Rest

I am very new to bench rest shooting, having attended only one RBA Match at my local club (MidCarolinas Rifle Club). Most of my active shooting has been with air rifles for the last few years. Within the last year, I have renewed my interest in rimfire. Within the last 3 months, I have acquired a very nice Winchester 52C and have now equipped it with both a Ken Viani rail + Weaver T-36 scope as well as its original Redfield International rear and Olympic front sights.

It can generally shoot with sub-MOA accuracy at 50 yards, I have found the ammo the rifle likes, and I have even acquired and am trying to learn to use wind flags. But, to me, it seems that my biggest problem is that the rest I have used all these years, a Caldwell Rock, is now inadequate to take me to the next level.

For now, I don't want to drop $500 or more on a new rest and I don't want to modify the 52C or buy a custom BR rifle. The best option, I think, is to upgrade the Caldwell by adding a Fudd top. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I am using a Caldwell base for my RF BR matches and my CR BR Group matches. I built a 'custom' top from various scrap laying around the shop plus the top and bag off my Farley Compact. I mostly built this top for use at a long range RF silhouette match where you need at least an inch of movement. It turned out better than I could have hoped for so I use it anytime extreme precision is needed.

A Fudd top should work well for you. Also a set of Super Feet really helped my set up. I only use them on the 2 front screws. I use the rear screw as the elevation adjuster and using a Super Foot there makes the knob much harder to turn.
