Unknown Cartridge. Help me out.

Well I stopped in my local gun store and was browsing and found a bag marked "Unknown Cal". The owner aid that he got them from a widow who was getting rid of all her late husbands gun stuff and they weren't marked. They are reloads, with 6.5mm soft point bullets. They looked like 260 Remington to me and are formed off of Mil-Surp 7.62 NATO brass so I bought them($6.00). Well I got home and broke out my caliper and I am pretty sure they arent 260 Remington. I have compared the dimensions to every common 6.5 caliber i could think of and it didnt match any of them. Here are the specs.

The shoulder diameter is .039" less than the 7.62 MM and the body length is .030" shorter as well. So, it's a wildcat. The name? Whatever you want to call it.

How about a 6.5 x 257 Improved? Just guessing. On second look I think Francis has it.

You're waaaay off. Neither a .257 case, nor improved. FBike was closer but the shoulder diameter doesn't jibe. The closest wildcat I know of would be the 6.5 Panther, but it's not it either.

It looks more like a 264 McLarenross. ;)

A whole bunch of 6.5X? you need to check against. I would look at the 6.5X55mm and all the rest of the European ctg, sure is a bunch of them. A bunch of 6.5 enter this counties after the second world war and were brought home by GI that wanted to shot their old trophies.

264 McLarenross!! I like that sound of that. I bought 50 of them for $6 just to see if I could figure out what they were. It cant be too weird. The old man was using it as a hunting gun. I looked at all the most common stuff, Europeans too.

Are you sure those dims are correct? 2.832 is one hell of a long cartridge, not even th 6.5/06 comes near it, does it have anything stamped on the head?

I've looked at dozens of case diagrams and the closest I can come to it is the 6.5X50 Arisaka. But the rim of .470 and base of .460 is a strange combination. Maybe the chamber is swelled just a bit.

All of the foreign cartridges have different base and/or body diameters. C'mon guys, it's a wildcat made from 7.62mm brass. We could spend the rest of our days trying to figure out what the name is. I collect wildcat cartridges and am here to tell you that, unless the guy who designed and built it comes on the Forum, we'll never know.

Donald, the rim and base diameters of the 6.5 Jap is not odd or unusual - it's a semi-rimmed case.
