I'm interested in scoping either my Remington 40X or H&R Model 12. I'm getting older and my eyes aren't as good as they used to be. You know the drill. I have competed in high power earlier in my life but have never used a scope for anything. I'm not sure if I actually want to compete in benchrest but I'm thinking I might try it. When I start looking at scopes, my head starts spinning. Both of my rifles have blocks apparently for the older, longer tubes like the Redfield 3200s, Unertl, etc. Should I disregard these mounts and go with a newer, shorter tube? I did get on the list for a Viani mount for the Model 12. I guess the 40X would require utilizing the available drillings for newer mounts. I was looking at some of the Weaver scopes and seem nice, would fit my budget and get nice comments. I'm sure I won't be shooting past 100 yards. I realize what I'm saying here is going to cause many of you to roll your eyes but I have to suck it up and start somewhere. I was told Benchrest Central is the best place to get the answers.

I'm also interested in F Class with a center-fire rifle but that is for another forum.

Thanks for your patience.

Steve

The newer, shorter scopes are not only better performers they are far easier on the eyes. Look for a weaver or sightron 36X.

Yes, shorter is good. I had a modified 3200 some years ago that I sorta wish I had back but I can't remember why. Weaver and Sightron are great choices for a budget but I wouldn't look much, if any, lower.

36X will be plenty.
