Tube Gun

I agree Hambone, not only do we have an accomplished shooter having a great time shooting F-TR with one, but he also writes about it. I have been tossing the idea around in my head to build a tube gun platform and German's recent success had put it in the forefront of my mind again.

However I am thinking F/0pen use and Germans issue with the bipod already solved one potential issue...

Too bad my mind is so full of diverse ideas and my pocketbook does not match my enthusiasum... LOL!!

Ain't that always the way? Haha!

Some of my best ambitions have been stalled by the lack of reach in my chequeing account.

Dad always use to tell us " boys, your dreams are free, but real life costs you cold hard cash".

It took me a few years to figure out how right he was.

Well worth doing, I built this rifle around a Barnard P action and Barlien barrel a little while ago. 6.5 x 47 Lapua. Capable of 3" groups at 1000yds, and not just in calm conditions.

I think the tube gun LOOKS like a great tool for the F-class game, but i don't know squat about f-class really. I asked about this very thing some time back on here i do believe and the replies were somewhat mixed. Some folks claimed that the tube gun was to top heavy and that canting would be a major issue. Im not 100% the fellas that claimed this were f-class shooters but then again i cant be sure they were not?? Like i said, i like the idea. I think the AR 15 platform is very comfortable to shoot while shooting prone, so i would have to think the tube would also be very comfortable to shoot prone. So from the fellas that shoot this game, are there any canting issues with a tube gun? Lee

Having spoken to the shooters of Tube guns they have no more canting issues than the next shooter. Some say they have less due to the guns ergonomics .

Brian - Tell us more about your tube gun. The front handguard attachment looks different from the standard Elesio one that is held on with some screws. Yours looks like it screws on kinda like a Tubb gun.

Thanks in advance

Hi,

Always wanted a tube gun but having spoke to Elesio and others, getting one of the kits over here was just to expensive and time consuming. A friend of mine and I had a look at all the various alternatives, the securing of the front handguard being one. We decided to go with a knurled screw on ring rather than the screws because it seemed to offer more rigidity. We made a circular recoil lug for the action which sits into a pocket in the main body. The knurled ring tightens up on this.

I’ve shown a picture below of the roughed out components, prior to finish machining and anodising and also a side view of the rifle which will probably give you a better idea.

A lot of hard work, but worth it. Not only does it put a smile on my face every time I get it out, it’s also the most accurate rifle I own which is very satisfying.

Brian - Absolutely fabulous work !!!! The disassembled pieces look a little different than the finished gun in the stock and trigger guard area so I am guessing they were a prototype ? Now for the most important question. Do you sell the guns or the plans ? :)

Thanks again.

There was quite a bit of finishing and polishing after the photo was taken. If fact some of the parts were completely remade, you can see in the first picture, under the cheekpiece two bolts were used to clamp the LOP tube, whereas in the parts picture we originally thought one would be enough - it wasn't.

If you send me a pm I'd be happy to put you in touch with the guy who made a lot of the parts for me, he is a RFD (FFL) so might be interested in making another one. May work out expensive though if you live in the States. The MAK or Elesio would be a cheaper option if you do, and from memory Barnard themselves are now making a tube gun.

However I'm happy to help if I can.

Brian - As your rifle is set up now - will it accept the standard Elesio stock setup ? Has your machinist ever done a bolt action repeater version also ?

No, non of the parts were made to fit an Elesio or any other tube gun, it is a one off. The RFD has never built a repeater version, he did make one other (the prototype) for himself which was a single shot 6mmBR.
