looking for practice? so does anyone have any suggestions on what to start practicing on to true actions?:D

I will be using Greg Tannel's method and truing fixture to perform this operation.

Thanks:D

This would be good for a start...

Take a piece of thick tubing with about an inch hole in it. Set it up in a lathe and dial the center of it within a few ten thou... if the tubing is round enough. Thread inside this tube to a fixed distance. Remove it for inspection. Then place it back in the lathe, and dial it in again and pick up the thread and make it a bit deeper...

repeat as much as you want.

A person could also bore it like a receiver - bigger at the front, do as you say with the threads, and, practice facing the step back inside as practice for doing the bolt locking surface on a real receiver.

I'll make a dummy receiver like that, bore it to .702" full length, then open it up to the same diameter as my Savage target action. After that I can go through the process of getting it centered in the action truing sleeve I made, and practice the machining operations.

Good thread, it will get me some practice.

Thanks
