trigger control frustration

the last club shoot i was about ready to quit shooting, went back and shot after the shoot and i was still up-down-left-right, didnt have a clue what was wrong, went back today and got with another shooter and i shot a couple shots, still not good at all, checked my farley rest-front bag-rear bag etc. etc. was all ok, other shooter sits down and proceeds to put 3 bullets thru the same hole, i was positive i was not touching any part of the set up except the trigger which he also confirmed as well, after a short discussion on what else could be wrong-i asked him to show me how he uses the trigger and the problem was discovered--i was using the tip of my finger to fire and also at the wrong angle. he also showed me some hints on my new winds flags which is a major plus. our club is luckly, a mostly left to right wind, so this helps.

why is this sport so fun---another shooter helping me figure out what i was doing wrong---is one of many factors...also he offered to buy my new rifle, i said i will let you know....

good for ou you got some help. i am still stumbling around finding different things i am doing wrong on my own.

i can shoot every night if i want in my backyard. at present i am playing around with my martinis but will be back to my calfee and davis soon. then with these fine rifles i will have no excuse.

all my rifles shoot far better than i can so it is a continueing battle finding things to frustrate me.

good shooting

Bob,

There's a lot ot learn. Most of us are still learning after years of shooting. I find it easier to learn and retain something if I don't mix too many martinis with my rifles. Seems to make one forgetful, not to mention that they make you feel lousy the next morning.;)

It's all in the mind

I pull the trigger mentally too,no joke.I imagine a straight pull to the rear, nice and steady. Each shot.I shoot indoor for the moment and doing so I can focus on technique.I still have to learn to read the wind.Maybe in the near future when our range hopefully expands. Then I can bug you guys again with a lot of questions:)
If you can adjust the trigger position make sure you touch it with your index finger at about 90°.
Control your breath too.Inhale a good breath, exhale, inhale normal, exhale and block halfway exhaling and this is the moment I shoot(within a few seconds, max 8).By inhaling first more air you get more oxcigen in the blood.More oxcigen gives better sight.the second stroke you inhale normally if not your pulserate will rise. This is basic rifle shooting technique but I don't know if you benchresters are familiar with that.
Try to keep your cool when shooting. If not results will drop.Strange invention the human mind.

Let that same shooter shoot ten 3 shot groups and if they are all small, smaller than what you are getting, then look at technique, set up, tune, ammo and so forth.

A poor shooting rifle will occasionally shoot a one holer, your friend might have stepped behind it at the correct time.

i also let him shoot a whole 50/50 card afterward and its not the gun

If it is a case of both of you JUST shooting free recoil, he is either aiming more precisely or reading the flags (if you were using them) better. If not using flags then it was pure chance he outshot you. It is as simple as that.

If we had more details, we could better help you. You cannot expect help if you just say someone outshot you and you don't know why, too many variables.

sorry you must of missed something somewhere in this thread or i didnt make it clear, i am a ok with what my problem was and isnt any more. my trigger pull was my problem. he shot same bullet holes, then i sat down right after him before my trigger problem was found and i would be all over the place, i then changed my trigger technique and all is well now...

bill

Nipper Bill, are you going to let us in, what's the technique? Thanks, Douglas

an elbow rest, a wrist rest level with the trigger housing and trigger finger at 90 degree angle, trigger touching middle of last finger joint, and breathing control as well, which from stopping smoking almost a year and 1/2 ago and working on a treadmill 7 days a week helps that, my at rest pulse rate is also dropping the more i work out, did 1200 calories on a treadmill at lunch and rode a bike 30 minutes and i am headed back to the gym now.. see ya later, if my heart dont explode first

heart

well bill i go in thurs for a heart job. i think i heard the dr. say excerise did he really say that?

oh boy i hate excerise.

bob

i just got back and did another 1100 calories on the treadmill, its no big deal once you get used to it, a year and 1/2 ago i could not have done 100 calories on a treadmill

bill

My my you have really seen the light :)

It's true, breathing control and propper finger positioning helps.
As for the palm and elbow rest:great if the bench is dead steady. If it moves I touch nothing. The slightest move has influence. Then keep your arm floating.

Sporting improves your general condition, thus your pulse will be lower after a while.try to keep your pulse above 140 while excercising. This is the rate that builds condition. At about 120 140 you burn fat if you train more than 1 hour.
Do not exceed a rate of 220 minus your age.

Have fun shooting and working out,Pieter

@ cwop:a pacemaker can do the job too!

if the benches move at our club, i will have more to worry about than where a bullet is going to hit.
